Southern Gothic Genre

American Literature was shaped in part by the traditions of the Southern Gothic Genre. Southern
Gothic literature has many of the same aspects as Gothic literature, it focuses on many topics such as death, madness, and the supernatural as well as had many mystical, violent, and grotesque aspects. The traits of this genre include Race/Class/ Social Structure, unrequited love, good vs evil, being an outsider, and violence. Three important short stories are Possibility of Evil,
A Good Man is Hard to Find, and A Rose for Emily.All three of these stories clearly portray the traits of Southern Gothic. This essay will explain how each of these stories fit into the different traits of Southern Gothic.

For example, One illustration of Race/Class/ Social Structure is ¨ In my time,¨ said grandmother, ¨Children were more respectful of their native states and their parents...¨ Oh look at the cute little pickaninny!¨ This shows how grandmother tries to tell her grandkids how it was more respectable back in her days.¨ Grandmother thinks if you're more respectable, you will be classified as a ¨ gentleman¨ or ¨lady¨, she thinks means to be good or do right. Grandmother reflects back on her past to show what it means to be well respected, but it is very ironic because she doesn't show much respect to others as she would want her grandkids. However, This story shows at least three traits and one of them is unrequited love. This is shown when the grandmother tries talking to her son Bailey and he just sits there and not listening and not considering her choices.
The last trait is being an outsider, which would be the Grandmother as when she speaks

The next is being an outsider, Homer Barron comes to the south from the north and being called a ¨yankee¨. The last one is violence, which is Miss Emily killing Homer Barron. She poisoned him with arsenic so that he would stay with her for the next twenty years until she died. Faulkner demonstrates in ¨ A Rose for Emily¨ when she lay in bed beside Homerś dead body, ¨ Then noticed that the second pillow was the indentation of a head...¨ This demonstrates how Miss Emily laid there with his body which is Disturbed personality. Miss Emily father also isolated her from guys and that's why she the way she was withering Homer because he wasn't fully committed to her so she thought of killing which also illustrates Disturbed
