Southern Europe includes countries of the Iberian peninsula (Spain and Portugal), the Italian peninsula, southern France, and Greece. Also, includes the Balkan countries of Southeast Europe. It is a mountainous area and a Mediterranean Vegetation region that has mild climate.

Alpine Orogeny is a phase formed fifty million years ago when the Eurasian continent plate and African continent plate collide together. The Alpine Orogeny produced intense metamorphism of rocks, crumpling of rock strata, and uplift accompanied by both normal and thrust faulting. Some of the mountains are tall as twelve thousand feet to fifteen thousand feet. For instance, Mont. Blanc rises 15,778 thousand feet above sea-level and it is the second highest mountain peak in Europe and the highest mountains in the Alps. It lies in the western Alps, which the west side is narrower and higher. The French language created several terms that describe the physical features in the western Alps, including the terms Cirque, col, Arete, and crevasse.
