Southern Baptist Reflection

Socially group work is often praised. With phrases like “two heads are better than one”, team work seems like the most logical choice for a project. This has not been my experience at Florida State University. When faced with the prospect of another involuntary group project I imagined many possibilities and outcomes. None of which reflect my actual experience with the research I conducted, the way the information was formatted, or my experience with Group 3. Through the pamphlet project, I have learned more about Christianity, especially Southern Baptist, from an outside perspective. I have a greater understanding of the importance of family roles. I have also faced the challenges of working with others and reporting without my personal religious …show more content…
However, I stumbled upon my own Mount Sinai, the Southern Baptist Convention. In one large network of sources, there was an easy to follow, extremely visual, and unusually detailed official website. After reading from the SBC site and their sister site the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, I became confident enough to really get into the research. From the research conducted I have learned three key things about the Southern Baptist Church; diversity, acceptance, and allocation. From the national and global demographics research, I learned how vast the Southern Baptist Church is. According to the SBC, the church spans across the world. There are about 46 thousand churches with ethnicities, including Anglo, African American, Korean, Hispanic, Haitian, Chinses, and 22 other ethnicities. The church’s size range from small family churches to large mega churches. All of which escaped my idea of a who and what exemplifies the Southern Baptist …show more content…
Group three experienced this challenge. Once again taking in account six people and six different school schedules the challenge was understandable. However, that does not mean that it is less stressful. Watching the weeks go by without any information text on the website was hard. I faced the internal struggle of being a good group member and being a good student. I struggled with communicating the urgency of completing the project to the rest of the group and not annoying everyone on the group chat. In the end, this challenge was solved by my fellow group members completing (thankfully and barely) before the deadline. If I could do the project over I would be less passive aggressive and talk to my group members about completing the work together to get it done earlier. Looking past all of my complaints and challenges this group assignment proved to be helpful and educational. I learned how to work in a large group, communicate in difficult situations, and produce a great outcome despite the

The website baptistdistinctives.com points out that they both agree with the practice of believer’s baptism, which is the belief that baptism should be performed only for professing believers “”baptist distinctives”. They also both perform baptism by emerging completely underwater rather than just sprinkling water over a person’s head. Unlike many other Christian denominations, they do not practice infant baptism because an infant cannot place his or her faith in Christ, so it would not be a genuine baptism. Southern Baptists and Seventh-day Adventists are very similar to each other, however American baptists have some differing opinions. Southern Baptists and Seventh-day Adventists tend be on the more conservative side and do not allow women to serve as pastors in their churches.…

Both the Baptists and Methodists resonated with the African Americans because they were not preaching one thing and doing another. Methodists experienced an increase in their growth “the Methodist had just achieved a virtual miracle of growth, rising from less than 3 percent of the nations church members in 1776 to more than 34 percent by 1850, making them far and away the largest religious body in the nation(Finke and Starke 156).” However, the Methodists experienced a decline and the rise of the Baptists “as the Methodists declined from 42 percent to 28 percent of all adherents, the Baptists grew from 30 to 43 percent (Finke and Starke 157).” The transformation from sect to church was one of the reasons that the Methodists lost their numbers, and what they lost the Baptists came to gain in…

Making a change in the world for the health care provided to Jehovah’s Witnesses didn’t become so personal until recently. My cousin who is a Jehovah’s Witness as well passed away last month after being put on the waiting list for liver transplant. She got sick two weeks before, but really didn’t think anything of it until she started having sharp stomach pain and was having trouble walking. She and her husband went to the hospital that night, there they tried to give her a blood transfusion, but since we do not accept blood as Jehovah’s Witnesses she refused to take it. The hospital they were at in Austin couldn’t assist her any further so they transferred her to the hospital down here in Katy where things started to take a turn for the worse.…

I feel like most of my beliefs are extremely old fashioned especially when it comes to relationships, the way we dress, and technology. The majority of my beliefs about my relationships stem from being raised in the south and being a southern Baptist. I feel that a man should lead his family in all things, especially when it comes to religion. Also, because of my southern Baptist raising or spiritual beliefs, I am strongly against having sex before marriage. I feel like it is something that is special and should be saved once you have fully committed yourself to someone and have become one with them.…

We had the opportunity to meet with the minister from Calvary Baptist Church in Sheldon. He was able to share more about his beliefs and how this project is not just about studying a new religion, it is an opportunity for us as believers to find the light that God has provided. The first question was, “What is the Baptist’s source of authority from which you receive your beliefs and your direction for living?” Pastor Marcus Moffitt replied to the question by saying: “Historically, Baptists have used the BIBLE as their ONLY rule for faith and practice. Unfortunately, in our day and time, far too many Baptists are taking far too many cues from the culture in which we live… for instance, music and dress, and letting the world dictate our life choices instead of…

Dr. Cloud presented information I have read before; nevertheless, it was information that needed to be repeated and reflected upon. I personally do not enjoy partaking in group-based assignments based on my own personal negative experiences, although, I do acknowledge the benefits group work can bring. It was highly noticeable to me, that working remotely can be difficult for some students to manage given the lack of existing relationship between members. I, as a team player, was a highly active contributor throughout the creative synthesis projects, who understood my effort would determine not only my own academic outcome but also the outcome of my peers. Although, not all who are trusted with the grades of their peers, take such a responsibility so seriously. Each team member brings different experiences and expectations to the table and therefore, navigating these assessments can be somewhat treacherous if team members are not on the same page.…
