South Western Reflection

Improved Essays
The term started out with me displaying emotions of excitement and anxiety. Florida South Western to me was much more than college, it was a new world filled with new people and opportunity. Opening up to students and other members of Florida South Western was my greatest issue since I am naturally an introvert, but I knew I would eventually perceiver and learn how to interact with others. This semester at Florida South Western has influenced my life in many ways. The most influential things I found at Florida South Western were the school events, the clubs I have participated in, and the experience of taking college classes.
The school events at Florida South Western were much more beneficial than I initially thought and I found it to be very influential on my semester. The first event I went to was a very relaxed social event where students and staff of Florida

I wanted to join a club to become involved in FSW’s community and gain skills that I would find useful in life. These two factors led me to join the Leadership Academy and the Millionaire’s Club. The Leadership Academy gave me tools and skills that has shown me how to interact with others, think critically, and become a well communicating member of society. While the Millionaire’s Club offered me knowledge on having a financially prosperous future, it also allowed me to become a key member in the Student Government Association (SGA). The Million’s Club was new and needed key positions to be filled so I decided to jump at the opportunity and take a major role in the growing club. I soon became a Club Representative and gained a seat at the SGA meetings, further increasing my leadership ability from my active participation at the meetings. The opportunities of the clubs I joined during this term have influenced this semester at Florida South Western through the leadership and knowledge I have

Extracurricular activities like the FFA and 4-H Organizations, help students, like me, gain experience in a variety of areas that will enhance our future. Through participation in these organizations, I have learned cooperation, teamwork and time management. By serving as an officer, I have also gained responsibility, as well as problem solving and communication skills. FFA has opened doors to new leadership roles at both a local and multi-county level. I have been given the opportunity to serve as Teutopolis Chapter and Section 20 Reporter and Vice President.…

Weekly current events educated me about issues going on in the world that I was clueless about. Quarterly presentations taught me how to create an effective presentation and present it with confidence. Each and every assignment had a purpose behind it, and as a student, I have never felt as eager to learn and become a better person until I joined this program, and met the most inspiring teacher, Ms. Suess, who tells my class all the time to follow our passion. I would not have matured and came this far academically if I didn’t join this…

When I started attending Northern Virginia Community College, I joined the Black Student Alliance(BSA). My perception of this club had nothing to do with reality. I thought it was a club made to bring awareness of what is happening in the world in general and in the black community in particular. Unfortunately, it was more about personal issues they were facing and making friends. The semester after, I applied to be a board member.…

The story I have chosen for reflection was completed as an assignment for CMJ 256, the story was a report on an event during final exam week when the therapy canines visited the students. Moreover, in the story I wanted to put a spotlight on the trainers and their dedication on using animal therapy by making it accessible not only to students during finals week but year around; such as hospitals, airports, and even in prisons. Things that could make the story better is having photos or a video of the event that shows how the canines are able distract students from a stressful time and refresh. Additionally, I could have cited sources that have graphics and scientific studies that were done to make a point of why Grand Valley has this event.…

I decided that I would take leadership roles throughout high school in order to help serve the less fortunate. KEY Club, a service and fundraising club, became my focus, and I travelled up the ranks to become the school’s external affairs manager and the service committee chair of the Eastern Canada District. As I introduced more extra-curricular activities into my life, organization became more important -- and I was shocked to see how much it helped me save…

I know that this story is gruesome, hard to hear and ultimately painful to listen to. But that’s the issue, there’s a stigma around fraternities that ‘boys will be boys’ and that this type of tragedy is bound to happen to at least one out of the thousands of men that enter a fraternity. Especially as college students, we are so used to hearing sirens go off around the weekend that we become numb to the issue at hand. People are in denial about hazing and binge drinking and excessive drug use that they naturally want to overt their gaze instead of dealing with it, which only perpetuates the problem. If we start to actually recognize the ramifications that come with being apart of a culture that this is normal in we can turn things around for the better, and maybe even save someone’s life.…

In Student Affairs we can challenge students to think creatively, speak boldly, and lead fiercely in their college careers. Students attend college to gain knowledge and learn at a higher level of thinking, to me that means we must challenge them to adapt and learn more about themselves, the world they live in, and how they would like to fit into the world around them. This concept is greatly encouraged by the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, a framework that encourages students to learn about integrity, authenticity, inclusion, meaning making and collaboration (Komives, 2011). As Student Affairs professionals, we can provide students with leadership experience and challenge their developmental growth through leadership, teaching students that leadership is not only about holding a position but rather the behaviors of working towards shared goals and ideals (Komives,…

    St. Bernard Reflection

My time at St. Bernard has taught me many skills that I will use both in college and throughout the rest of my life. I would like to believe that I am a very different person from the frightened fourteen year old I came to St. Bernard as four years ago- smarter, more adaptable, more accepting, more critical of myself and others. It is hard to say how much of the change can be directly credited to St. Bernard, but the growing up and learning I have done has mostly taken place here, both inside and outside of the classroom. You can grow older and more mature anywhere, but there is something about St. Bernard that makes it special, something unique in the classes, the campus, and the atmosphere. Four years is a long time, but now, at the end of them,…

The Indiana Association of Student Council, or IASC, is more than a statewide program for all the student councils within Indiana. IASC upholds the pillars of Inspiration, Action, Service, and Character, transforming ordinary students into remarkable leaders through the amazing conventions and camps they hold annually. I, Phillip Phan, am fortunate to be elected as a Northeast District Representative for the IASC Executive Committee. Being a part this committee has been life-changing thus far, in a similar SLI, or Student Leadership Institute, was this past summer. This picture of my family from SLI symbolizes the changes I have made as a camper, as a leader, as a person.…

University of Pittsburgh My first thought coming to University of Pittsburgh was, “I traveled nearly 8 hours away from home and I probably won’t like this school”. When we arrived at the school it was so terrible in my opinion, because we rode around trying to find what building the event was supposed to be in; it was like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Even before entering the building I knew that there were going to be a ton of people there and even though I was nervous and apprehensive I proceeded onto the Open House.…
