The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, also known as the FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia in Spanish), agreed to a ceasefire with the Colombian government. The ceasefire talks have been in the works for four years. The agreement was reached through a series of meetings in Cuba facilitated by Raul Castro, President of Cuba, Rodrigo Lonodono, leader of the FARC, and President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos. The ceasefire agreement comes after 52 years of civil war between the members of the rebel group and the Colombian government. The two parties agreed to a peace agreement that will go into effect on August 29, 2016. The peace deal is set to be formally signed on September 26, 2016. The signing of this peace deal is expected to have a significant impact on the country’s economy and tourism.

For instance, President Barack Obama has pledged $450 million dollars to Colombia in 2017 to help facilitate the peace plan. This pledge will have a direct impact on Columbia’s economy for the year 2017. This is important due to Columbia’s economy being on a decline since 2013. However, the long-term effects of the peace deal are not expected to come to fruition until several years down the road. Furthermore, the peace deal will help bring peace to 25 out of 32 provinces that have been in unrest for 52 years. These areas and the entire country of Colombia will now be deemed safer, in turn, impacting the tourism industry to feel more secure about visiting the
