October 29, 1860, was a fearful night for Abram Colby. While Abram Colby was in bed, some members of the KKK broke into his house and took him into the woods. While in the woods, they whipped him for three hours, or maybe more. When they asked him the question “Do you think you will ever vote another damned Radical ticket?” He replied “If there was an election tomorrow, I would vote the Radical ticket.” (Abram Colby). Another reason they whipped him is because he was a former slave. Those people were very racist. Lawlessness/fear is another reason of why the South killed reconstruction. Everyone was so fearful of the KKK because some of the members were first-class men in the city. Some were lawyers, doctors, and even farmers (Abram Colby). The KKK hung a man named John W. Stephens. He was a State Senator. He was stabbed and hung in the Grand Jury room. I can understand why they might think that, but the South killed reconstruction. The South killed reconstruction because of three main reasons: KKK, racism, and lawlessness/fear. The KKK is a very bad group of terrorists, they would kill people if they were helping fund reconstruction, and people were afraid to stop them! Racism is very bad and is not okay. Making fun of other religions, or races is not ok. It is a very bad thing. Everyone was fearful because they lost their jobs, and they still funded the reconstruction, but they needed to put food on the table, and nobody had enough
