South Dakotas Boy's State Reflection

Improved Essays
During the last week of my junior year, I attended South Dakota's Boy's State. For me this was an interesting experience because for the first time I was surrounded not only by the brightest students in my school, but the best and brightest from the entire state. Overall, this was an eye-opening experience because everyone attending had thoughts to contribute to running our own state. Those who became involved had their own personal perspective that was shaped by the social, economic, and geographical characteristics of their home region. The most intriguing aspect of the week had nothing to do with actual government policy. Instead, I left understanding that when people of different backgrounds come together for a length of time, everyone

The Patriot Academy was designed by Rick Green to inspire the younger generation to get involved with government politics from a Biblical worldview perspective. The Academy week long program is consisted of workshops dealing with media relationship, public speaking, campaigning techniques, and the philosophy of the Funding Father of the United States (“Patriot Academy-Rick Green”, 2017). This is a beneficial organization to our society because it is training the youth to be a positive force in the community and house floor. Young people learn that their voice count and what they bring to society is change and positive conservative leadership. This leadership academy develops future leaders such as campaign consultants, pro-life activist,…

The West Virginia Board of Education v. Barnette case that was argued from March 11,1943, to a decision made June 14,1943. The case was filed when a member of Jehovah's Witness, Walter Barnette, was opposed to children in public schools being forced to salute the flag at activities. Barnette had fought other cases for his religion that didn’t like saluting symbols. Since children caught not saluting were expelled or charged as a delinquent, Barnette said that making kids salute the flag was unconstitutional, violating the first amendment.…

In Bill McKibben’s article, “Why Dakota Is the New Keystone,” McKibben expresses through vivid word choice, aggressive tone, and sentence structure, why the New Keystone should be in the Dakota’s. He brings together these elements to paint a vivid picture to persuade the reader into believing it too. McKibben uses words that clearly show what he wants the reader to picture and shows how he wants to shape this piece. He illustrates this by stating that there are “shocking images of the National Guard destroying tepees and sweat lodges and arresting elders” (McKibben).…

    Nathan Lefeld Analysis

The most recent Presidential election has consumed the national consciousness. With each passing debate, speech, headline, and commercial, we have been flooded with negative messages that are highlighting all that is wrong with our current and perspective political leaders. We seem to have leaders who are devoid of the character necessary to handle the great challenges that face our nation and our world. It would be easy to sit in a state of despair about the future of our country. I, however, find solitude in knowing that we are raising a new generation of young adults in our schools, such as Nathan Lefeld, who can strive of excellence academically, persevere through adversity, find joy in service to others, and work extremely hard to earn…

That, in turn, helps me grows as a person. There is little else that gives me more joy than leading discussions, presenting, and debating just about anything: our foreign policy and politics, the environment, the true nature of man, and even the (immense) value of the domesticated chicken. Furthermore, as a foster child, I have moved around a lot and have seen innumerable faces; as a result, unfamiliar and strange groups have been a part of my life for so long that I am comfortable with them. Getting along with others has been key to survive in high school; I have made amazing friends and acquaintances as a result of that. With all of those qualities in mind, I believe I could contribute to the Girls’ State program by offering my quirky personality and devotion to my country to meet new people and get engaged with our government.…

If you had asked any of my peers for a description of who I am, they would have said that I was someone who was shy, and possibly even a bit awkward. This was a personality trait that I had been struggling with throughout the majority of my life. I had grown up as an only child, incessantly feeling out of place among my peers. It wasn’t until the middle of my freshman year of high school that I gained the self-confidence I had only dreamed about.…

    Baltimore City Narrative

I align myself with the youth of Baltimore City. Since enrolling in a Baltimore City Public School, I feel more connected to the rest of the city and the issues that affect young people daily. There is often times negative, and discriminatory image of us, which I admittedly used to have myself. During my young life, I thought those in public school were uniformly impoverished, aggressive, and, for lack of a better term, “ghetto.” I was insecure about my voice, my packed lunch, even my own safety when I entered high school.…

There was never a dull moment due to the wide range of diversity, talent, and personalities of students. I made amazing lifelong friends that appreciated my presence, ideas, and personality. The entire student body participated in deep discussions over a wide range of topics including beliefs, injustice, and conflicts in our society. Everyone treated other’s contributions with respect and consideration of their ideas and views. Each discussion and activity opened my eyes to recognize meaningful things that society normally overlooked.…

Another thing I learned was that you have to learn to respect a person’s perspective; whether you agree with it or not. There are always going to be people with different mindsets. You just have to learn how to work with them. You’re going to have to work with it throughout your whole. Whether it be social,…

In Student Affairs we can challenge students to think creatively, speak boldly, and lead fiercely in their college careers. Students attend college to gain knowledge and learn at a higher level of thinking, to me that means we must challenge them to adapt and learn more about themselves, the world they live in, and how they would like to fit into the world around them. This concept is greatly encouraged by the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, a framework that encourages students to learn about integrity, authenticity, inclusion, meaning making and collaboration (Komives, 2011). As Student Affairs professionals, we can provide students with leadership experience and challenge their developmental growth through leadership, teaching students that leadership is not only about holding a position but rather the behaviors of working towards shared goals and ideals (Komives,…

Each council member gave their opinions and views about the project very briefly before it was opened to the public. Each council member agreed that the project must be moved forward and put into action because this will be good for the entire community. One council member mentioned how he like to see every different sport present in the room at the time and I thought that was very interesting for him to give credit to the kids for showing their support about the issue. The head councilman believes this new turf field will help advertise for the town and bring in more people because they can see the town taking new actions towards improvement.…

On November 30th, I attended my last first year experience event; I attended the post-election discussion. This was by far the most interesting presentation I have been to. During this presentation, many topics were discussed about negativity and violence. It was a panel of people talking about their opinions on this historical and political election. As said in the beginning, one professor stated, “a man’s last name has now become simonious with negative change.”…
