South Dakota Murder Case Study

The October of 1998 in North Dakota was the start of a string of murders. The victims were women of ages ranging between 22 and 29, with petite frames, blond hair, and fair skin. Most of the women were regulars at local bars and were known to be of the wanton sort. The suspect’s profile can be built based on the crime scenes.
Family Background
The suspect may have targeted women of this specific appearance (22-29-years-old, petite, blond hair, and fair skin) because of their resemblance to a woman in the suspect’s past. The evidence suggests that this women may have been the suspect’s mother as there was no evidence of sexual trauma. The evidence also suggests that the suspect’s mother may have been involved with a number of men because the

Because the women’s ages ranged between 22-29, the male would have to be within a range around or greater than that of the women’s. He would also have to be old enough to enter the bar, and older because the suspect may have gotten to the point of getting married to a woman and then was rejected, so he must have been around his early 30s. To be able to afford golden rings for his victims, he must have been old enough to be a financially stable individual. After the multiple murders, the suspect could be placed in an age range of mid 30s to early …show more content…
He must also have access to cash to buy the rings without leaving any trails. He must have a job that not suffices as the source of income for him to be able to afford gold rings, but also allows him to access the river since there are no trails or paths near it. The river is mostly accessible and utilized by local fishermen so the suspect may be a local fisherman himself. As a fisherman he would have access to a boat which would explain the lack of tire tracks found at the river bank.
Location
Bodies were found within 2.5 miles of the bank of a river in North Dakota, around 10 miles away from the most local town. The women were found at random secluded locations after being picked up from bars. Most were regular patrons of the bars, recognizable by the bar staff. The suspect must be a local who is also a regular of the bars, regular enough to know which women were promiscuous. This also backs up the idea that the suspect was a local fisherman who was aware the area was secluded and had access to a boat that allowed him to reach the river bank without leaving tire tracks.

Wrongful Conviction On the morning of August 10, 1984, Deborah Sykes was brutally stabbed, sexually assaulted, and eventually killed in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The man convicted for her murder was Darryl Hunt, a 19 year old boy that would go on to spend 20 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Hunt was convicted based on eye-witness testimony and informants, but was later exonerated based on DNA evidence that matched a man that was caught just a few months after the murder took place. This case is an exemplar of the strength of DNA evidence and the fragility of eyewitness testimony.…

Peter William Sutcliffe otherwise known as ‘The Yorkshire Ripper ' was arrested on January 1st, 1981 after a murderous spree which spanned five years and claimed the lives of 13 women and attempting to murder a further seven (see appendix for details of victims). The case engulfed the nation as one of the most brutal in modern history since that of ‘Jack the Ripper ' in the 1800 's hence why the media adopted the term ‘Yorkshire ripper ' when addressing the case. Although known for the heinous crimes and number of them the case is also infamous for the failings of the West Yorkshire Police force in its hunt of Sutcliffe. The tension throughout West Yorkshire left neighbour suspecting neighbour and women afraid to be out at night alone. Despite the efforts of the police force, it was a standard patrol with an experienced officer who was training another that caught Sutcliffe and brought an end to his spree.…

During orientation I was able to understand more of what the Cobb County Victim Witness Unit does. I was not surprised about the lengthy steps that were involved in the criminal trial process, however to be able to hear true life scenarios from my supervisor made it more real and very appealing to me. The VWU advocates assist in various ways, such as attending any trial/court hearings to support the victim or witness, assist with any paperwork the victim/witness needs to fill out (restitution or compensation forms) and making sure the victim is informed of any new circumstances surrounding their case, such as plea deals, bonding out or release. I was also informed that a few times my supervisor herself went and picked up a victim in order to…

The aim of the study was to determine the accuracy of the predictions of offender profiles, which allows law enforcement and investigators to theoretically prioritize certain subjects. Profiling is used to find a particular subject which committed the particular crime. The profile must be accurate meaning the construct of the profile must allow for a certain individual to be identified. The construct has been criticized as being too general with its statements and the profile being overall to ambiguous, allowing for many possible suspects to fit the profile descriptions. The current study purposed that, like the participates in the early Barnum studies, individuals can allow certain subjects or situations to fit the apparent statement,…

Criminal Profiling White Paper Ali Wiethe University of Dayton According to Kocsis (2010), criminal profiling is defined as “A forensic technique which seeks to provide investigative agencies with specific information which will help focus attention to individuals with personality traits that parallel traits of other perpetrators who have committed similar other offenses.” Through this definition, it is believed that profiling will help law enforcement officers pursue and interview suspects, because they can narrow in on the right suspects and use interviewing tips for the “type” of suspect being questioned. As a relatively new aspect of criminal investigation, criminal profiling has required several studies in which the accuracy…

Ten people in the Wichita, Kansas area between the years 1974 and 1991 were brutally murdered by Dennis Lynn Rader a.k.a the BTK Strangler. After years of fear and horror the BTK Strangler was identified and captured by police. This would not have been possible if the police investigating murders in the area were unable to connect the killings, create a profile of the killer, and then use that information to build evidence against Dennis Rader. The first and arguably the most important step in the catching of a serial murder is connecting crimes through the process of crime linkage. This paper will take a look at how police have used crime linkage to build criminal profiles that have helped catch famous serial killers that include BTK, the…

To find this area at night and to some degree be concealed from their victims the offenders would have had intimate knowledge of the surrounding area and therefore would mostly likely have been local residents. However John Byers one of the victim’s fathers was a local resident and was searching for his son for most of the night and still did not find the crime scene. This then implies that the perpetrators had specialized knowledge of the area and that perhaps were hunters of some kind or part of an organization such as scouts that frequents bushy…

Anthropology, the study of humankind, has four main branches: Cultural Anthropology, Archaeology, Linguistic Anthropology and Physical Anthropology (Larsen 2014). Physical Anthropology focuses mainly on uncovering the mysteries of human evolution by studying fossilized bones of ancient humans and primates to determine their place in our family tree and study what circumstances led to the evolution of the modern human (Larsen 2014). There is a specialty within Physical Anthropology called Forensic Anthropology that "examine skeletons to identify who they were in life" (Larsen 2014:6). Some from that field apply that extensive knowledge of bones to the remains of modern humans to help investigators determine the circumstances surrounding the death of that person and whether or not they have been murdered. This paper will focus on how those forensic anthropologists identify victims by calculating their age, sex and ancestry.…
