South Carolina Flood Narrative

The morning of October 4th was the date of the South Carolina flood. I remember waking up to my mom’s voice saying “everyone get out of bed, fast.” Then I ran downstairs to see water seeping in through the doors. All the carpets were starting to float up. I saw my mom and she said to put on shorts so that my pajama pants would not add weight. Also she said to put tennis shoes on. By the time I got downstairs everyone was running around. The dogs were taken out of their kennels and were being held. My dad went over to the garage and flipped on the lights to see if he could reach the boat. However the water had risen too high to go in the garage. Suddenly we saw lights appear in the driveway, we realized it was a car. We were so joyful until …show more content…
Then they sent the word that we kids could come see it, but Kate my youngest sibling stayed because she was a little scared. When we pulled up to the house the first thing I saw was the mud line that was left behind on the windows. It was about 6 feet high. At the front doorstep there was a deceased fish lying at the door. When I got to my room, I peered out the window over to Fort Jackson to see a steady river of water still flowing through. I went into my closet and got lots of clothes. Then I walked outside and put my suitcase in a car. Next I went inside to help the adults look for things on the ground that could be salvaged. Eliza walked up to me and asked me to help her find Bubba, her red eared slider turtle. Bubba was kept on the screen porch in a fish tank which had fallen and shattered, Bubba was free to swim around in the flood water. Thankfully the screen porch kept the turtle in. After a while we found Bubba under a couch cushion in his shell. So we put him in a bucket and filled it with

This article wakes up the reader’s perspective of how natural disasters can be steepened by the hubris of politicians in control; they’d rather worry about attracting growth to a city without considering the safety repercussions of its citizens. The article gives specific examples of exactly how the politicians failed the citizens. The disaster of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana, and the flooding along the Mississippi River, was extremely disastrous to humans and the environment. Freudenburg says, “In very real senses, these have been floods of folly, created not just by extreme weather events, but by deadly and avoidable patterns of political-economic choices.” (p. 1).…

As we were using the restroom Andrew Myers, Jahzara Mckinney, Kadance Gravely, Maddox Lyons, Hayden Elliott, Kaylie Hawks and myself were pulled into the sewers and through a pipe that somehow took us to a island. We were stranded there by ourselves the island was like a forest in a way it has tall redwood trees high grass like the jungle and a beautiful glossering pond. So as we were there we were all panicking then I just got really quiet. We went to bed and the next morning Hayden and Jahzara were fighting over food we had from killing Andrew we had a lot of food left over from yesterday but both Jahzara and Hayden wanted that same piece.…

In light of recent events down in South Carolina it has been brought to my attention that we have a serious problem and that problem is, flooding. Now there is absolutely no excuse for flooding, it can and should be prevented. It’s not like an earthquake, where you have no warning and it’s not like a tornado where it swoops down and suddenly destroys everything. A flood has a warning, sometimes weeks in advance.…
