As it is a memorial sculpture, A. Monti Granite Company used granite as a way of conveying a special meaning. The sculpture was strategically orientated by its artist to ensure it is not damaged by excessive sun exposure. Since the sun rises from behind the sculpture, the artist did not see any need for protecting the artwork using some shading techniques.
South Boston Korean War Memorial is considered an outstanding piece because it honors the twenty soldiers who died during the Korean War. Using a quality material such as granite shows the quality was maintained in making the sculpture. This signifies that the soldiers who lost their lives were valued, people. Granite seems to be the most suitable material for making this artwork. For instance, granite does not depreciate easily, and it is resistant to destruction by snow, rain, and the sun.
