Immigrants and refugees have been in the news for years, but the topic has heated up considerably in the past year. South American refugees have been flooding across the southern border of the United States with illegal immigrant Mexicans. They are often front page news, especially with the presidential debates going on. In Europe, migrants and refugees are dying in tunnels trying to get to England from France where they are stuck in camps they call "inhumane".
Millions of people have been displaced by the civil war in Syria. Many Syrians have fled to the neighboring country of Turkey, but they are not entirely welcome by the Turkish government who does not officially view the as "refugees". They figured that the best way to celebrate the joy of their marriage was to make a difference in the lives of those that needed it the most. Relevant Magazine reports that instead of the customary wedding reception, the couple bought hot meals for 4,000 refugees in Kilis, a Turkish city on the Syrian border. Not only did they buy the food, they helped serve it themselves while still dressed in their wedding attire.
Think about this. If there were only 50,000 weddings in Turkey (probably low for a country of almost 80 million people) and everybody shared their wedding feast with others as this couple did, you would have 200,000,000 meals. Even with 2 million refugees, that is a hot meal for every single one of them 100 times over.
I'm not saying that everybody should feed 4,000 refugees on their wedding day, or at all. But when you look at those numbers it sure does give you something to think about.
