South American Colonization In Africa Analysis

Improved Essays
During the European colonization of Africa, many European countries invaded Africa and essentially took over. The Europeans gave the Africans their languages, religion, and knowledge. They used Africa’s resources to expand and build, making themselves more wealthy and powerful. For the Africans, many lost their homes, independence, and families because of war and disagreement. South America is struggling and America is deciding whether or not they should colonize South America. Colonization of South America should be forbidden because it can cause cultural divides, and cause war and resistance.

If the South Americans resist the Americans help, then there is a strong possibility that there will be repercussions resulting in war and death.

In the video, “A brief history of European Colonization in Africa” narrated by Pete McCormack, it is stated that, “By exploiting linguistic, ethnic, and cultural differences between the peoples of the north and the south, britain's divide and rule policies created a tension between them that helped maintain british rule” (McCormack, 2006). Because of cultural divides between the Africans and Europeans it provoked tension between the two groups. The tension made the Europeans create more strict policies, maintaining British rule. If the Americans and South Americans created cultural divides, the way they interact with each other may cause fights and disagreement. Africans suffered from a breakdown of their traditional cultures, “Traditional authority figures were replaced. Homes and property were destroyed with no care of their importance to the natives” (World history: Patterns of interactions, 2009, …show more content…
Colonialism reduced local welfare. Humanitarian efforts in some countries improved sanitation and provided hospitals. As a result, lifespans increased and literacy rates improved” (World history: Patterns of interactions, 2009, p.784). Because of improved sanitation and hospitals, people had better health allowing people to live longer. Also, because the Europeans came into Africa with knowledge, they spread it to the Africans. Since the Africans became smarter, they could work better jobs, expanding the economy. There is a strong possibility that South America can also be improved in those ways. Although this may be true, the Europeans could not care less if the Africans got killed, they built hospitals for themselves. They expanded the country for their own wealth. America will use South America to gain wealth. According to McCormack, “In Rwanda, Belgium entrenched the idea of the Hutu as a workforce, and the Tutsi as extenders of Belgian rule. The politicization of these two cultures would profoundly contribute to the genocide of 1994” (McCormack, 2006). This supports the fact that the Europeans did not care for the lives of the Africans. They separated them into groups by appearance, and made them fight. The only reason they came to colonize Africa was so they could become more wealthy. Which is what America would do to South

Europe held an interest in imperializing in Africa from the beginning of the 1800s all the way to the mid-20th century. They had great intent and need for the land and resources that Africa provided and technology way beyond what the Africans had access to. Yet, despite this, the Africans did not easily cede their freedom. Some attempted regular trade relations and tried to be civil before rebelling, while others assumed fighting roles immediately and went down kicking. Therefore, while the Europeans may have won the war when it comes to imperialization, the Africans certainly did not give in without a fight and won a battle here or there.…

The last thing that colonialism affected Africa was the education. (Doc M) shows that 33% of Europeans got secondary school which is like high school, and they were spoiled compared to the Africans which only had 1% attend secondary school. This statistic showed that what jobs each of them attended. For example with all the secondary school the europeans attended they were most likely to be doctors, scientists, or something high end or good paying but the Africans had a good probability of being farmers, cloth making, or blacksmiths because of the 99% that did not attend secondary school. Charles scribner Describes in (doc N) that the 1% of Africans that attended secondary school were most likely to be very successful Jomo Kenyatta, a very…

This led to diseases being spread and the population decreasing in African kingdoms. However, the effect of colonization wasn’t necessarily all atrocious. Many beneficial things were introduced, such as western education, modern transportation, and the construction of infrastructures. In general, though, imperialism's cons outweigh the pros because many of the “positive” effects did little to zero good for the Africans. Things such as western education could only be helpful to a small group of wealthy Africans who could afford it; still, millions of Africans were still being exploited and starved.…

All the Europeans did was take all of their resources and have them do all the labour behind it and ship it to there home town. The examples to prove the driving force of the European imperialism in Africa is in the White Man’s Burden, imports and exports of Great Britain and South Saharan Africa, and the technology and imperialism comparison. The first example of the European Imperialism is the White Man’s Burden document. This document shows that the whites thought they had something above the Africans that's why they conquered them and made them work for them and or they would sell them. The Europeans did this because they thought they were someone better than the Africans when in reality they were the same in a way.…

European colonialism “opened up the country,” improved life for Africans, and allowed the African continent to begin to emulate the western world and meet European standards for civilization. The Europeans reduced Africa to ignorance, poverty, and disease, without even acknowledging the innumerable cultures, traditions, and histories that made up Africa prior to imperialism. Even more, according to the European colonialists, nations such as Britain were the only ones capable of saving the African people because they had what they believed to be the superior “initiative of the white man,” as opposed to the “life of fear and uncertainty” of the Africans. The belief that Africans were a lost people prior to colonialism is one example of how the Europeans used their classification of Africa and her people to justify their occupation of…

Historical Facts: The first known human civilizations were characterized to have been artistically creative, community oriented, and socially diverse. They lived simple lives, with strong communal values emphasizing on nature, family, and the spiritual realm. These first societies lived in what is now known as the central and southern region of Africa ("African History and Literature" Power point-Hall). In the African creation myth, "The Creation of the Universe, Ife, and Human Being", it states that in order for the human race to prosper, the most strongest/wisest god should always be superior than the rest and the other gods must know this, and not attempt to challenge his title (430).In the early African societies, respect for elders and…

Politically, European imperialism created tremendous conflict among African people, expanded Europe’s colonial boundaries by carving up Africa, and attempted to restructure society, only to leave Africa’s political structure weak and corrupt. Economically, European imperialism destructed Africa’s self sufficiency and increased dependance on colonial powers; strengthened Europe’s own economy, therefore further weakening Africa’s economy; and exploited many raw materials within Africa. Culturally, European imperialism uprooted Africa’s spiritual and traditional values, exploited the people of Africa, and prompted colonial racism. It is also clear that the problems facing Africa started when Africa started trading with Europe leading to culture contact which brought about the idea of civilization to the African continent. During the trade, unequal trade terms led to the transfer of wealth from Africa to Europe adding to the much wealth the European countries already had. Due to their advancement in technology Europe was able to infiltrate into the African Land and get themselves the natural resources and as well as manufacture products with their machineries and sell the end products and still get the lions share in the profits acquired. Walter says, “Colonialism was not merely a system of exploitation but one whose essential purpose was to repatriate the profits to the so called…
