Growing up in a small, conservative, and a blue collar town, women held a significantly higher role of subordination to men. Not only was it the norm for women to be subordinated, but it also was not unusual for school-aged girls to be too. There were countless times when I was told, either directly or not, where my place was as a female. During middle school, I experienced an incident where a fellow male student would play basketball and used my breasts as the hoop. Then, in high school there were multiple times that I was told that “my role as a woman was in the kitchen” or “go make me a sandwich”.

Yet, women still face an overbearing amount of responsibility while not working. This is also known as the second shift, meaning, “a woman’s continued responsibility for the maintenance of the household and the needs of her husband and children, even when she has a full-time job.” (Lober 24) So, not only do women face lack of movement at work, when at home they can face most, if not all, of the responsibilities it takes to run a household and take care of a family.
