A primary source is a document that was created at the time of a historical event. Some examples include: the Declaration of Independence, the Magna Carta, and the Mayflower Compact. All of these are documents written by an individual who was personally involved in a historical event. They are not telling us what other people witnessed; they are telling us what they witnessed. The primary source that I want to look at is a first-hand account of the battle of Lexington and Concord during the Revolutionary War, which was written by Lieutenant John Barker.…

For example, Tierney claims, “…conventional interstate wars are now very rare…about 90 percent of conflicts are civil wars.” These are compelling assertions, but they not attributed to any authority. Additionally, Tierney states “In 2006, there were 1,000 American officials in the Baghdad embassy, but just 33 spoke Arabic and only six were fluent.” If true, this statistic is certainly a damning indication of the US Department of State’s cultural and linguistic depth in 2006. However, there is no way to know because Tierney doesn’t refer the reader to a competent authority or reputable source.…

News media has controlled the way information is broadcasted and presented to the public. Articles surrounding constant controversy can be written in different views regarding bias against the major parties involved in a controversy. A great example of these bias in news media is the current ongoing separation and divorce battle between Hollywood heart throb Johnny Depp and soon to be ex-wife Amber Heard. With both parties having their share of fans it is no surprise that media outlets are willing to present bias information to adhere to the overall voice.…

Most of us probably believe we have absolute freedom when it comes to what we view on the internet. However, Barbara van Schewick points out in her article ‘Network Neutrality Nuances’, that we only have access to bits and pieces of the internet (Schewick, 2009). What we are able to view is all decided upon by our ISP. Schewick states that ISPs select what we view in order to maximize profits, to ban content which they consider to be inappropriate, or to keep track of all signals on their network (Schewick, 2009). She does an excellent job of explaining why this is wrong by bringing forth real world examples, using thought-provoking literary devices, as well as by connecting with the reader (Schewick, 2009).…

The graph from the Business Insider showcases the cost of a four year degree versus the earning of a four year degree between the years 1964 and 2010. When looking at this graph at first glance, David Blake wants the audience to believe the costs of education for a four year degree are greater than the financial return the college graduate will receive with the job or profession they used the degree for in the first place. Blake is able to make the audience believe this quickly, if they do not look closely at the graph, as the graph’s title states “The diminishing financial return of higher education.” Blake uses two lines comparing the expenses of tuition, room, and board with the bachelor’s degree earnings. From the graph, it seems that as…

Typically, when people think of doing research they automatically go to Google to search their topic and gather the information needed. One issue that this causes is that this specific search engine finds thousands of results that may not even be relevant to what one is searching for. This causes long hours of frustration and it takes researching a lot longer than it has to be. I was once a Google addict when it came to school assignments, but thanks to a few professors I now know that other sources are available that makes research a breeze. There are three different types of sources that I will focus on; popular sources, trade sources, and scholarly sources.…
