Gnomeo And Juliet Analysis

Shakespeare's tragedy Romeo and Juliet, a story of two young lovers who kill themselves because they are kept apart by a feud, is an example of source transformation because it takes many ideas and plot points and adapts them from other stories, especially Ovid's Pyramus and Thisbe. Romeo and Juliet has also been a basis for other mediums such as films and art, for example, the movie Gnomeo and Juliet, which took Romeo and Juliet and used the main ideas and themes and other plot points to make a movie. One example of an art transformtion of Romeo and Juliet is 'The Curse,' by Annie Leibovitz in 2008 for Vogue Magazine. Her artwork of Romeo and Tybalt brings a scene from the play to life. One theme in Romeo and Juliet that has been adapted by …show more content…
Romeo and Juliet is set in Verona, Italy during the Renaissance while Gnomeo and Juliet is set on Verona Drive in modern day in the United Kingdom. "Two households, both alike in dignity (In fair Verona, where we lay our scene)" (Act 1 Prologue, 1-2). The characters in both stories are also very different. For one, the characters in Gnomeo and Juliet are gnomes. Romeo and Juliet and their familes, are actually people. In Gnomeo and Juliet, Romeo's name is changed to Gnomeo. The gnomes themselves are not Montagues or Capulets, but instead red and blue. Gnomeo belongs to the blue gnomes while Juliet is a red gnome. In Gnomeo and Juliet, there is a flamingo character named Featherstone. Featherstone could possibly be translated to Friar Lawrence because of how much he helps Gnomeo and Juliet try to be together despite having a family feud and being forbidden to love one another. Featherstone encourages Gnomeo and Juliet to try and live a happy life together and to overcome the feud. He himself used to have a lover so he connects with Gnomeo and Juliet. Like Friar Lawrence, he is completely on Gnomeo and Juliet's side. Unlike Romeo and Juliet, Gnomeo and Juliet do not have both parents. Gnomeo only has a mother; his father unfortunately died. Juliet only has a father; the story of her mother is unknown. Gnomeo's mother's name is Lady Blueberry, nothing like Lady Montague …show more content…
Leibovitz is representing the fight scene in which Tybalt kills Mercutio, causing Romeo to kill Tybalt, which can be found in Act 3, Scene 1 in Shakespeare's work. The angle and perspective in Leibovitz's artwork is eye level, also known as third person objective. When someone looks at the artwork, it feels like the person could be in the picture. This perspective is important because it allows people to see what the characters in the scene see. In the frame, Romeo has just killed Tybalt. Mercutio is laying dead in the background with Benvolio standing over him. It looks like the characters are in an old building. Outside the frame, viewers can infer that the Prince is on his way to the scene and to calm the ruckus. In 'The Curse,' there is a feeling of harmony between each aspect of the painting, based on the fact that all the colors have a green undertone and are very neutral and earthlike tones. The features of the painting seem rather balanced and realistic. However, Romeo does look rather larger and much more stronger than all the other characters. This could represent that Romeo is the more dominant character and this scene portrays him as powerful. The expressions of emotion in the painting include shock, depression, extreme anger, and devastation from Benvolio and Tybalt's men. Tybalt is

This line said in Juliet's monologue could be interpreted as "Oh, Romeo, Romeo, where is Romeo?" by directly summarizing, but in context in the play, which becomes apparent with analyzing and synthesizing, it's translated to "Oh, Romeo, Romeo, why do you have to be Romeo?" This also evidently proves how the Shakespeare sharpens many skills used by high schoolers on a daily basis, based on how most lines will require them to use and practice these skills when reading the…

Although Benvolio uses his logical mind to think ahead, Mercutio tends to live in the moment. One of the most notable examples of this, is in 3.1 where Mercutio is stabbed by Tybalt. Benvolio says in the beginning, “We talk here in the public haunt of men./Either withdraw unto some private place,/And reason coldly of your grievances,/Or else depart. /Here all eyes gaze on us” (Shakespeare.3.1.24-27).…

In particular William Shakespeare uses him to showcase the theme of tragedy, specifically in the moments leading to his unfortunate death when a passing Mercutio says “A plague o’ both your houses!” This quote implies how this unruly murder was the inevitable result of useless conflict and how both families were responsible for it. Shakespeare further emphasises this by using repetition and having Mercutio reiterate the hateful phrase several times magnifying the tension. The themes of tragedy can also be seen elsewhere including the climactic ending to the scene where Romeo kills Tybalt, and in both scenes plays a vital role to the play, by using the character Mercutio to explore these…

First of all Romeo killed Tybalt and got himself banished. The prince was talking to Benvolio, Lady Capulet and Montague and said, “Let Romeo hence in haste, else when he is fond, that hour is his last” (Shakespeare, 1051). This quote is important because the prince is discussing Romeos punishment for killing Tybalt. The second thing is they both lied about them and did not tell their families. Juliet says, “My love, sprung from my only hate!…
