Soup Kitchen Observation Report

At first glance the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen can be mistaken for an abandoned building. But once the doors open, your perspective of the small building changes for the better. The first time I went to volunteer I had the misconception that the only service was in food preparation. Even though I did end up helping out in the kitchen, it turned out to be a much more meaningful experience. I had the opportunity to experience a new environment and was able to interact with a diverse group of individuals, families, and children. Christian Raschke’s article is all about the time that one person puts in while preparing food with taking a deeper look at how food prepping affects people below the poverty line. The author’s purpose for this article was to see what factors lead to people using their food stamps for quicker easier meals than buying the ingredients and taking the time to prepare the meal and make it. Raschke’s intended audience for his article would be scholarly people who want to take a look into certain aspects of people who are a part of the SNAP program and what might cause some of their choices. Raschke assumes that his audience has a basic understanding of the food stamps system and knows what may lead some people to make the decisions they make. In…

One of the most sobering insights of the book, voiced by a soup kitchen volunteer was, “We’re seeing fold who are just stunned to find themselves in a soup line. People are coming to understand that they are only a job loss or an illness away from catastrophe” (Herbert, 2014, p.101).…

The socioeconomic combination is great; no one is considered an outsider. There are all races, and religious groups eating, joking in an environment of heartfelt care and love. It is evident that the volunteer staff value connecting and building lasting relationships for Christ. Matthew 25:35-36 (KJV) “For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.” Jesus concludes this section of the parable by saying, inasmuch as you have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, and you have done it unto me.…

I wasn’t sure what I expected when going to my community service for the first time. The place that I choose, the Lincoln Park Community Shelter, resided nearby the Lincoln Park, DePaul campus, so I just thought it would be an easy travel to and from the train station. Walking to the site, it was something that I’m not easily used to at home. Around there, there were clean and beautiful scenery all around. Every block I would walk pass a jogger or a person walking their dog in the peaceful environment.…

This photograph, taken by John Vachon in Dubuque Iowa, April 1940, shows how during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl, many homeless people, and those who have faced disaster relied on soup kitchens to provide meals. Soup kitchens that were donor funded, and run by volunteers, served primarily soup and bread to those in need, trying to provide to as many as possible each day. The boys in the photo are an example of how even children relied on these places to provide them with access to food. I chose this picture because I feel that it clearly portrays how many people at the time were facing homelessness and poverty, and places such as soup kitchens were necessities in order for them to make it through each day. As they did in the 1930s,…

One area where many people fail to reach their full potential is service. Humans were put on this world in order to love and care for one another. Yet, many times it can seem inconvenient or tedious to give to those in need. There are so many other things people would rather do than support their neighbors, that humans today have forgot of the great importance of service. Most people, like myself, fail to understand that service doesn’t only benefit the person in need.…
