Before we began walking as a group we took a few minutes to discuss what we thought we would hear during the Soundwalk. We assumed that we would be hearing the buzzing of busy Toronto streets, lots of cars and people continuing on their daily routines in the midst of Chinatown. We anticipated music coming from stores, the occasional ringing of a telephone and possibly an emergency vehicle alarm, but we didn’t know if all of these elements would be heard during our walk.
We do not feel that the sounds we were making changed throughout the walk. Our own sounds consisted mostly of the rustling of our clothes and our footsteps. Our sounds were drowned out by the more prominent sounds of the landscape. Interestingly enough, we also noticed that

A windshield survey of the City of Charleston was performed beginning at one of the main streets, Calhoun Street. The first quarter mile includes three different hospitals along with numerous medical offices. To the south of Calhoun there are multi-million dollar historic homes along a seawall called The Battery, most of them dating back to the 18th or 19th century. There is an elevated walk way on The Battery where locals and visitors take walks, enjoying the sounds of the waves and sea birds. The air smells salty and fresh, and the air is also usually humid.…

In the text, Just Walk on By written by Brent Staples, an African American author, speaks of his experiences with racial profiling in the 1960s. His message in the text is centred around that racial profiling that resides within stereotypes, specifically, that him, a six foot two black man is “a mugger, a rapist, or worse,” even though he is educated with nothing except good intentions, (Staples, 542). By connecting his audience through a vivid sense of his own perspective, his strong use of diction, onomatopeias, and analogies, creates a compelling passage that makes his message easy to grasp and understand. The beginning phrase, “my first victim was a woman; white, well dressed…,” shows readers that these experiences will come from him personally,…

Sound. Another complicated, complex idea humans struggle to completely understand. Sound is highly difficult to understand and explain. It is difficult because sight overpowers hearing. Additionally, sound is difficult to explain because it is affected deeply by different experiences, such as: Berine Krause’s personal experiences in his “First Notes” article.…

This week’s core lecture was on “Baby Driver”, and students were able to see the movie. The movie was presented to allow the students to connect to a subject that has been presented in many lectures, and readings. For example, last week’s core friday “Hip-Hop: The Movement” emphasized on how music during a block party allowed people to feel united, and joy. In relation to the film, Jayson Beaster-Jones’ presentation "Music and Value: Participatory Performances" discussed how music brings, and unites people together. Then, “Baby Driver” connected to Patricia Lichtenstein lecture, "Language, Cognition, and Metaphor" on how music permits its audience to listen, and imagine a scenery.…

While looking through stacks of pictures I realize how important the memories in the photos are to me. One particular photo, from ninth grade, is especially significant to me not because of how I or my friends look, but because of how much my life has changed in the few years since I began high school. Walking through the doors of Bartram trail High School my first day freshman year was the start of who I was and who I would become. Today and I am a bigger and better person than I was the first day of high school as I have become the person I wish to be and I have high school to thank for that, but more importantly I have Link Crew to thank. Link Crew is a part of the Project Boomerang program created for freshmen, designed to help freshmen adjust from middle school to high school with assistance from upperclassmen who are able to share insight about their high school experiences.…

I believe that life is about communication, listening and understanding the world around us. Sound is one of the most important aspects of communication, without sound it is difficult to listen and communicate. In Listening to Wild Soundscapes Bernie Krause argues “It's the world's first theatrical, acoustic manifestation that among other things kind of provides us with instant feedback as to how we're treating the natural world.” What a powerful concept that I feel everyone should understand and feed off of, I believe that the world around speaks to us in many ways and the information we learn from our environment may enlighten our listening to the people around us. In The Poetics of Space Across Latitudes, Gordon Hempton asserts,…

The expansion of technology into our daily lives has brought about many benefits but also many problems. In her essay “Silence and The Notion Of The Commons”, Ursula Franklin delineates the effects technological trends have had on sound and silence in our time. Specifically, Franklin explores how changes in the intrinsic nature of sound has, and will continue to affect our society. To illustrate this concept, Franklin first explains the natural characteristic of sound. It is, most importantly, transient.…

Sound and deaf may appear at first sight to work in completely different worlds, but this is not the case. In this paper, I guide regard on how sound is construed in deaf, how rethinking sound can overturn deaf hearing, and how signing and other non-spoken communicative practices may fix music for the deaf community. Mi aim is to relate the journey of a musical interpreter and how she translates and practices music in concerts and festivals to hearing-impaired audiences. To add to the above, I believe that sound and deaf should develop as fields with much to offer each other for all intents and purposes. Musical exercises appreciated most by deaf people are singing/marking tunes, listening to music, and moving or dancing to music.…
