Despite the Sotheby’s auction dislocating many key artifacts from their Memphis roots, a final round of public and private fundraising brought the newly renamed Soulsville Foundation to its stated financial goal and they broke ground in 2001. This occurred a mere ten years after LeMoyne -Owen College began the Community Development Corp initiative and twelve years after the city razed the original building. In 2001, the Commercial Appeal estimated the combined efforts of Soulsville Inc.’s Stax Museum of American Soul Music, Stax Music Academy, Soulsville Charter School with the LeMoyne - Owen College efforts in the strategic development zone caused more than $100 million dollars to flow into the revitalized South Memphis neighborhood between
