A mentor is a specific character that guides the character. Bethany’s mentor is Sarah, her church youth group leader. Sarah tells Bethany that she doesn’t know why bad things happen to us sometimes, but she has to believe that something good will come out of this. The sixth step of the Hero’s Journey is having a talisman. A talisman is an object that the hero relies on throughout their journey. Bethany’s talisman is her surfboard. Bethany’s surfboard why like a stuffed animal to her, she always had it with her and relied on it. The eighth step of the Hero’s Journey is crossing the threshold. Crossing the threshold is when the hero leaves the ordinary world. Bethany crosses the threshold when she goes on a mission trip with her church. Her mentor, Sarah shows Bethany that losing her arm is not so bad compared to losing her whole family like the people she met on the trip had experienced. The supreme ordeal is the ultimate challenge the hero must overcome to restore peace to the ordinary world. However, it didn’t count. In Soul Surfer, Bethany must learn how to surf with only one arm. Bethany reaches this point when she catches the best wave of her surfing completion due to the timer, but she says that “it counted to her”. The last step of the Hero’s Journey is the return with elixir. The return with elixir is how the hero has changed after the ordeal and what ways has she resorted peace in the ordinary world. Bethany replies “I wouldn’t change what happened to me, because I wouldn’t have this chance in front of all of you.
