Soul Surfer is an autobiography about Bethany Hamilton who at 13 lost her arm and nearly died by a shark while surfing. Bethany Hamilton was born into a family of avid surfers and was working on making a career of surfing.

It was 5:00 A.M. October 21, 2004 when Bethany’s mom came bouncing into wake her up to head out and catch some waves (heat). Bethany was eager to go since the last three days it had been raining and she was unable to surf. They hopped in the car and started to head out to a few of their favorite surf spots. It was still dark out but the smell of the beautiful flowers filled the air Bethany was wishing this were going to be a warm sunny day with lots of waves to catch. Bethany’s mom (Cheri) and unfortunately did not seem to have much luck the waves were barely rolling in the ocean seemed clear and calm. Just as Cheri and Bethany were about to leave her best friend Alana, Alana's brother, and her dad Holt pulled up hoping to catch a few waves themselves. Bethany begged her mom to stay behind with them in hopes of catching a wave.

Suddenly Bethany saw a big grey blob approaching her, she managed to stay very calm, she just looked away praying nothing would happen. She heard the sound of the sharks mouth open and coming right at her, it screamed and screamed she started to paddle with her right arm trying to get to shore.
