If we look back in history, there is a parallel between today’s societal difficulties, “The Recession” and the difficulties immigrants endured during the “Progressive Era”. In both eras, families have been known to combine together in one household in order to afford the many things necessary to carry out their lives. With this in mind, take into consideration that people of both societies often times have had families to feed. The livelihood of people depends on daily food consumption. When money is tight, people tend to find the cheapest way to feed their families. During the Progressive Era, soup kitchens were made available. During our current day and age, we have food banks and food stamps. There is also a newly popular option, fast food. Although quite alluring, fast food is highly noxious to the human body. The problem people face on a daily basis is that fast food is cheap and easy. It’s affordable and meets the necessity of food standards. In the next few years, we will start to see a gradual change in society’s view of a healthy lifestyle. Health food advocates have created a vision called “Healthy People 2020”. Their objective is to improve the health of all Americans. In my personal observations, I have seen that often times women are more likely to be advocates of creating a healthier society than men are. They generally go with the flow and lack the understanding of the importance of becoming a healthier nation. It’s as if they have little to no interest or desire to learn why people are so passionate and determined to achieve the “Healthy People 2020” goals that have been set into place. This may be seen as a sexist opinion, but I believe that it can be seen as more true than most people may realize until the details of it are brought to the forefront of one’s mind.
