The head of the household, Mama Joe, felt as if she was obligated to hold her family together for decades by having a nice Sunday dinner every Sunday with her family. Unfortunately, diabetes brought her down and caused her to get hospitalized. After she could no longer run the household, the tradition of Sunday dinners discontinued. Strains between her daughters Maxine, Teri, and Bird started to ruin the relationship of the family all together.

In this case with the family of Soul Food, they had a lot of pride. Everyone felt the need to keep quiet about what was bothering them and hold grudges. The communication was extremely poor. Added on to those other problems, things became extremely draining for the family as they had to deal with Mama Joe’s deteriorating health due to suffering from a diabetic stroke during surgery to have one of her limbs removed. She later died from it. The family defiantly split apart even more.
As time went by, Teri and Miles takes in cousin Faith, which led to Miles and Faith having a sexual affair that led to an even more unhealthy marriage and an altercation.
