The movie Soul Food unfolds the story about how important family truly is. As the story is being narrated by one of the children, Ahmad, he is able to paint a picture showing how the family is held together by Mother Joe. Regardless of how people in the family were feeling towards one another, come Sunday dinner, those feeling were put aside because being together as a family was more important than any individual feuds that were going on. Once the family loses Mother Joe, we begin to see the family unfold, because there is nobody there to help keep the peace between each other. Each member of the family believes that their answer is the right one. It’s not until the end that we see it takes Ahmad to bring them to the reality that they need each other, whether Mother Joe is there or not. He brings to their attention that all the friction that is tearing them apart is their own doing. It was an issue that they had to begin to solve themselves together, otherwise the family they once had would …show more content…
That their cousin Faith was only around when she was in trouble, and caused trouble for the family. The movie gives the impression that once she gets what she needs from the family, she leaves unremorseful. Her character is one that doesn’t really know what she wants out of life. Once she performs her audition, I think this is the beginning of the turning point of her character. She has found something she is finally passionate about. Although, she does making things a mess by getting involved with Miles, it is Miles that makes her realize that constantly running away can’t always be the answer. This is reiterated again at the end with the Sunday dinner and Ahmad stops Faith from leaving stressing that she is part of the family and that they all need each other. After all the dust finally settles, we see that Faith has no longer became the outcast of the family and is welcomed amongst them

However, Wendell Berry seems to think we can’t truly enjoy our meal if we don’t know how our meal arrived to our plates. In one of his most famous essays, The Pleasures of Eating, Berry talks about how in 1989 people did not know where their food came from or how it was produced.…

Throughout her separation from the known world, descent to the abyss, and gradual return to the old world, Janie’s quest develops Hurston’s themes of burdens borne by black women, the need for optimism, and realistic love.…
