Introduction

In this paper the Soufriere Hills Volcano will be analyzes in several different parts; an introduction to the Soufriere Hills volcano, the composition of the magma and lava in the volcano, other characteristics of the magma and lava, ash production from eruptions, pyroclastic flows, volcanic activity before the 1995 eruption, the 1995 eruption, cyclic activity within the volcano, and potential hazards of the Soufriere Hills volcano.

Soufriere Hills volcano is located in the south central part of the British overseas territorial island of Montserrat near the northern end of the Lesser Antilles volcanic arc in the West Indies (Young et al., 1998). The island of Montserrat is comprised of a number of volcanic centers that range in age from 4.3 millions years old (Young et al. 1998). The four volcanic centers on the island are composed of andesitic lava domes and fans of associated pyroclastic flow deposits (Young et al., 1998). The Soufriere Hills volcano is the only active center other than the four other centers to be active (Murphy et al., 1999). Montserrat is a small island and the Soufriere Hills volcano is approximately 5 kilometers across and 5 kilometers across with a height of 1 kilometer (Matthews et al., 2002). The Soufriere Hills volcano began erupting in 1995 and is still active in present day (Matthews et al., 2002).
