Chalmers Johnson’s thesis is clearly laid out in the first paragraph of the prologue. He comments on the notion that American’s are not aware of the fact that they indeed live in an empire. The creations of this empire is then explained in the following chapters.

Countries being policed by the United States don’t usually agree with the implemented policies. This system of policing not only increases the military budgets, but it also causes tension between the countries diplomacy with the United States. Middle Eastern countries and the policing has been a golden example through the past decade or so. Tensions continue to rise as the United States implements itself to take care of its own interests with no direct care for the country it’s in.
Furthermore, Johnson focuses on the secrets kept from the American public. His focuses are mostly on the military, globalization, and information the media does not show. He makes the claim that this negligence could aid in the downfall of the empire of America. Americans could argue that the Vietnam War set a standard for media coverage. The public being kept from information leads to tensions on the home front as well as a distrust in the government.

He puts four sorrows that combined would mean the end of America as it’s currently known. The first sorrow being in a continuous state of war, an increase of terrorism and an uprising against weapons of mass destruction. As Johnson predicted, more groups are causing an up rise and causing more destruction around the world. Secondly, Johnson says there will be a steady loss of democracy as more constitutional rights are violated. The media accurately portrays this through groups attempting to rid the constitution of certain rights. People are feeling their rights becoming violated and they’re started to lose faith. The third sorrow being a system of propaganda, disinformation to the public, and glorification of power and war. Through the system of social media, the use of propaganda has reached an unseemly height. The glorification is growing and the disinformation seems more prevalent, shown through the rumors in the 2016 election. And the fourth bringing bankruptcy to the United
