The ACLU uses pathos to work to evoke emotion from the ad’s viewers. The ad uses combination of both the text and two image to develop pathos. The images alone would not reveal emotion, but the text surrounding the pictures helps develop the a sense of emotions in the ad. Advertisements don’t always display a certain product, sometime they can be used to show an idea. During the first World War, the U.S. Food Administration printed advertisements with a women dressed in the American flag to convince the American public to save food. With this woman telling the American public to save on food, the U.S. was better able to supply their troops with food for the war. The U.S. Food Administration ad’s space is mainly taken up by the woman in a dress and cap with the American flag pattern. With the background being a light tan color it makes the woman pop out since she’s a different color.…
He refers to all of this to prove one thing, activism is meticulously organized and has a clear hierarchy. This is a stark difference between traditional activism and Social media activism. He states that social media serves as a network and while it is effective in certain areas its not as effective in others, one of them being high-risk life altering activism. He uses car companies as an example of this, while a network is useful in organizing suppliers, its not as useful in designing cars, he states that the reason for this is that when there’s no clear sign of authority consensus and goal setting is almost impossible to reach, which applies to activism. He proceeds to use The Palestine Liberation Organization as an example of…

News media has and continues to have an instrumental role in the shaping of protests movements. However, the role of the mainstream media in contrast to social media encompasses some over arching similarities and also some very distinctive differences. Through a critical analysis of the scholarly articles of both, Occupy Wall Street in Perspective, Calhoun (2013) and Twenty-First-Century Debt Collector: Idle No More Combats a Five-Hundred-Year-Old-Debt, Morris (2014), illustrates the sway of media that can be extremely influential in shaping protest movements. Theda Skocpol and Vanessa Williamson’s collaboration, The Tea Party and the Remaking of Republican Conservatism, and Todd Gitlin’s book, Occupy Nation, examine the formation and workings of two politically dichotomous social movements, the Tea Party Movement and the Occupy Wall Street Movement respectively. Both books profile each social movement profoundly and conduct rigorous research before making their respective conclusions about the causes and effects of each social movement. I found both books to be exquisitely-written and very insightful into the two movements. What made Skopcol and Williamson’s book so interesting was their field research and characterization of the Tea Party leadership. I much enjoyed their conversations at different…
Ronald Reagan once said, ”We could say that Democrats spend money like drunken sailors, but that would be unfair to drunken sailors… because sailors spend their own money.” In modern days, the face of the Democratic party is Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. The best friends of these people and their entire group of Democrats is the media. It is not just CNN, it is pretty much all the media besides FOX News, which people are desperate to tear apart. The Democratic Party is bad because they started the party as racists (Wormser), a lot of their ideas are questionable, and today they are destroying America.…
Throughout the years, many social groups have created activist campaigns to help improve human rights laws as well as to raise money for various charities and causes. Yet, help often comes from unlikely allies. Indeed, one can think of the Star Trek fandom who was one of the first fan groups to support social causes; indeed, Spock and Kirk shippers and other Star Trek fans made fundraisers for AIDS research and campaigned for gay rights (Jenkins & Shresthova, 2012, para. 1.7). Nowadays, this practice is referred to as fan activism (Jenkins & Shresthova, 2012, para. 1.7) With this in mind, the following essay will examine the connection between a celebrity, Emma Watson, and her fans as well as the way they practice activism.…
Plato’s Allegory of the Cave brings to fore the ramifications of experiencing life through a restricted lens. The story paints a decidedly bleak portrait of human beings trapped within the confines of a cave since birth, where the shadows of outsiders casted upon the walls craft their perception of reality. One of the men eventually manages to break free, and ventures out from his two-dimensional prison and into the real world; as he adjusts to this new environment, he realizes that the truth that he had known for his life differed significantly from the real truth. Eager to share this discovery, he returns to the cave and attempts to explain his observations, only to be met with denial and death threats. Despite the story’s age, its relevance…
