In the story Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, I hope that Harry finally receives his letter to Hogwarts. Harry’s uncle and aunt, who has been caring for him since his parent’s passing, have refused Harry this letter. However, his uncle and aunt cannot hide his letter for much longer because every day Harry receives more letters from Hogwarts. I believe that going to Hogwarts will greatly improve Harry’s life; currently, he lives in Dudley’s second bedroom and before that he lived in the cupboard. The cupboard had a spider infestation, and Harry could barely stand up straight in his “bedroom.” A person’s environment has a great impact on their upbringing; I have faith that Harry living in a place where people care for him and not see him

Joseph Campbell’s monomyth theory is evident within J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book as the notion of the “special world” (Vogler 10) is glorified through contrast in relation to the core themes of the texts. Within both novels, the protagonists are only able to truly experience the themes of family, belonging and the supernatural whilst in the special world, placing an emphasis on this realm. Furthermore, contrast is consistently utilised to demonstrate that the ordinary world cannot offer the experiences that the special world can, thus glorifying the supernatural realm through these themes. Also referred to as the hero’s journey, Campbell’s monomyth theory is specified as the comparative…

During the time that Dante wrote The Divine Comedy, the Catholic Church was very corrupt led by popes that were more interested in making monetary gains rather than being spiritual leaders. One purpose of The Divine Comedy was to express disgust with the Church of the time and to suggest what the reformed Church should look like. One way Dante demonstrates that he intended to present a picture of the ideal Church is by making his final guide Saint Bernard, a “critic of the institutional church and an advocate of ecclesiastical reform” (Botterill, 298). Dante, by creating his own version of the afterlife, is able to emphasize the sins he found to be most heinous in his own structure of Hell and celebrate the virtues he values most in his structure…

Once Upon a Time are the beginning words used to signify a fairytale, while a traditional musical begins with an opening number. Beauty and the Beast is such a Disney fairytale, complete with the opening lines of a fairytale, musical numbers, dances, and a happy ending for the romantic couple. The musical follows Belle, a young French maiden, as she winds up in the castle of a cursed Beast, where the two find true love and break the curse. Of course, the show is complex in its unfolding story and intricate cast of characters that journey alongside the main couple, adding to the elements of a true Disney fairytale. The musical Chicago, however, begins with the number “All That Jazz” and showcases a jazzy style compared to the romantic fairytale.…

In his essay “The Sorcerer and His Magic”, Claude Lévi-Strauss discusses his concept of what he calls the “shamanistic complex” (Lévi-Strauss 179) which based on research by Cannon that suggests people who believe in magic can be physically affected if they are cursed, bewitched or otherwise subject to magic (Lévi-Strauss 167-168). Lévi-Strauss then offers a qualification to Cannon’s assertion by saying that there are three elements which must be present in order for a magical ritual to have the desired physical effect. “[…] first, the sorcerer’s belief in the effectiveness of his techniques; second, the patient’s or victim’s belief in the sorcerer’s power; and, finally the faith and expectations of the group, which constantly act as a sort…

Hogwarts was Harry Potter’s Delusion: There is a theory that Harry Potter’s wonderful idealistic adventures in Hogwarts were a delusion he created for himself in reaction to the Verbal and Physical abuse. For starters, Harry's magic fantasies begin when, in real life, he's about to begin school at Stonewall High, being separated from his abusive cousin for the first time. It's a new school, a new environment, and therefore the perfect time to begin his delusions. First creation: Hagrid. Hagrid is so obviously a projection of Harry's impression of his Uncle Vernon, the only father figure in his life.…

In the film numerous characters and moments embody the theories Malory Nye point out in his book Religion: The Basics. Essentially, rituals and beliefs are prevalent in this film and the use of the theories can analyze such things. Examining Harry Potter using Arnold Van Gennep’s rites of passage, Edmund Leach’s theory of rituals and repetition, Claude Levi-Strauss’ ritualistic symbolism, and Malcolm Ruel’s definition of beliefs being “weak” and “strong” to convey that the aspect of the character’s lives basically comes down to the forming…

Ordinary World Harry Potter’s ordinary world is his home of number four Privet Drive with the Dursleys. When he crosses the threshold into the wizarding world, the contrasts between the two realms are drastic. “It’s a good idea for writers to make the Ordinary World as different as possible from the Special World, so audience and hero will experience a dramatic change when the threshold is finally crossed”, and it is (Vogler 87). Privet Drive was a dull and miserable existence for Harry. He was without friends, was shown no love, was given little to eat, and he experienced very little happiness throughout his time there.…
