Sopyonje And Peppermint Candy: Film Analysis

In the film Sopyonje, Yubong raised his adopted daughter Songhwa and stepson Dongho to perform pansori. The film follows the family’s struggling life as pansori artists; during a time that pansori was dying due to the vast popularity of Japanese and Western songs. Peppermint Candy follows the personal narrative of Youngho within a twenty-year period of the autumn of 1979 to spring of 1999. Both films were narrated through flashback. However, the key difference between the narratives in the films was the flashback in Sopyonje was linear, while in Peppermint Candy the flashback was non-linear as it was told in reserve chronological order. In this film, the climax is after Yubong forces Songhwa to master the prison song to the point where she is out of energy. This causes Dongho to express his opinion and the disagreement causes Dongho to leave. Dongho said, “It’s hard to make a living singing. You’d be better quite before you fall into sickness…Singing wont get you rice or food…I’m going to quit being a clown.” Dongho left because of Yubong’s harsh treatment toward his children to reach the true nature of pansori and the struggling living condition that he forced them to live because of pansori. As Dongho was leaving, he told Songhwa that, “You should leave, too. That’s the only way you’ll live.” The climax of the film clearly displayed the effect of the rising actions, which again was because of Yubong’s harsh treatment toward his children to reach the true nature of pansori and the struggling living condition that he forced them to live because of pansori. The character development that happened in the climax was of Dongho because in the past he accepted the mistreatment from Yubong, even though he clearly expressed his distaste for it.
