Sophomore Year Experience

Did you ever think something was going to be so hard and it ended up being fun and exiting? Well, that is how my first semester of sophomore year was. I thought I would have been loaded down with homework and stressed over due dates, but surprisingly all my teachers were very understanding and helpful with my transition into sophomore year. Teachers, friends, and family helped me get through my first semester with ease. I have accomplished so much in first semester, such as getting three A's for the semester, getting a gold metal in track, and gaining a somewhat closer relationship with God.

The academic aspect of sophomore year was not as challenging as it was perceived to be but I did have some obstacles. My biggest obstacle had to learning how to write AP US History papers in forty-five minutes. I am working my way up the AP scale, thus far I have gotten up to a four. Which is pretty good, considering the fact that I did not take AP World History history last year. Along with A.P.U.S.H., honors English really had me struggling at the beginning of the year, with Mythology and vocabulary. After finishing the book Mythology, I am now able to memorize names,

Running track year round was very challenging work into my schedule first semester. I had to make some decisions whether to pick something I love to do or do something to help boost my grade. I often chose my grades but it was hard because I love track with a passion. At the beginning of the year, one of my goals was to go to state in track during my sophomore year. In attempts to achieve that goal I dropped all of times by several seconds during first semester. Second semester is where it really matters because it is when track season for Marian officially starts. I plan to run consistently on a daily basis to drop my time even more to get to state in the 400m. dash and to work harder on getting farther in long and triple

Unfortunately, I got injured and had trouble getting focused thereafter. Cross country and distance track are two very similar sports, but they have some major differences and I had yet to learn that. I didn’t do terribly that cross country season, but once again, I was trapped in the lie that, “I can’t do this,” mostly because I was focused on the pain in the moment. Like the previous year, I moved onto track and excelled a second time.…

From my last 3 years of running cross county I have learned a lot of things. One is that you should never give up, second is that if you work hard enough then you can achieve whatever you put your mind to, and third is how you can go from disliking something to loving something. How I've learned these things from cross county is when I first started cross country, my sophomore year I couldn't run to save my life. Coach would always time us on how fast we could run two miles and I would always be last and be so far behind everyone else which was quite embarrassing but I couldn't help it I had just started and I'd never ran before in my life, at my very first meet I couldn't even run the first mile and I ended up having to drop out. After that I didn't like cross county at all because I wasn't good at it…

For the past year, I could only provide an indefinite answer to a frequently asked question, How was your freshman year? In fact, those of us who experienced our freshman year could be addressed as “college veterans” will never initiate a conversation with regard to the past year. Perhaps they consider that the freshman year was not as consummate as they initially planned. I cannot judge my first year in college was successful or frustrating, but I feel I benefited from the meritorious experiences and practical knowledge gained from my college life. In my opinion, no matter what goals one wishes to achieve in college, whether its grade, love, health, or sense of accomplishment, one has to be prepared for both failures and…

I think I am a strong candidate for this program because I have always been involved in several activities in order to expand my personal growth and knowledge. Here at Penn State, I am a member of the Anthropology Club and treasurer of the Sophomore Year Experience Special Living Option. Sophomore Year Experience is in the process of being developed into an officially recognized organization here at the main campus. My fellow executive board members and committee members are developing activities, classes, and programs to involve sophomores in finding more information about majors, internships, and future career plans. These organizations have given me the opportunity to develop leadership roles and communication skills as these are necessary…

I’ve learned from Hailey, that in order to be a successful runner, you have to stay self-motivated. Self- motivation can be a hard task to follow, especially in a mental sport such as running. That means you have to keep a good mental attitude even when you are being forced to your limits. Hailey has taught me and many other fellow runners to never let failure get inside your mindset, or become negative when…

When I started running, I fell in love with the exhilerating feeling of challenging myself to achieve something that even I thought inconceivable, and the joy of feeling sore in the following morning, ratification of my hard work. It was apparent then that everyday I was stronger than I had ever been in my entire life. With Track and Cross Country seasons filled with derailments, disappointments, and defeats, progress is less appreciable . The true reason I continue to run is not bullheadedness, but because ultimately I am not ready, nor with I every be, to give up on the person who I want to be and who I am working to become. My Cross Country coach’s mantra for approaching any race is “One girl at a time.”…

In the Spring of last year, it was my Junior year, one of the most critical years in high school. It’s the year that colleges look at the most, also it was the year that I was in some of the most challenging classes. Mostly honors, a lot of homework, and tests to go along with it. Studying would take me until late at night, and even on weekends, all day long. When it’s the end of the term everyone checks their grades for their report cards, and progress reports.…

Since my mom did marathons, I took up long distance running in track. Long distance training set up my foundation for how I run. All the early morning practices running long miles, pushing myself to my limit, really raised my endurance and tolerance level for getting tired. As I gained more experience and confidence in my running ability, I started to win notable races, such as my high schools districts, which started to open the door to having a future in running. There was talk of me running in college, however no coach wanted to take me in just yet with the current times I had.…

High School, especially my Junior year, has been academically challenging and showing me what I am capable of doing. The most challenging course I have taken is AP Chemistry, because of the difficult lessons that I needed to learn. My class, along with my teacher were great, but many materials were required for me to learn and know in preparation for the AP exam. Overall it was a little overwhelming, but when it was time to take the exam, I knew many of the answers to questions I would have never thought I could answer in the beginning of the year. The 2016-2017 year has taught me to realize my strengths, but also my weaknesses.…

While training myself for the race, I learned that you couldn’t do that with running. You could injure yourself, which could only be more of a setback that could prevent you from reaching your goal. Every day I pushed myself for a faster time and to run longer. Likewise, in my schoolwork, I pushed myself to study well in advance before the test and gradually build up on what I was studying every night. All in all, running has taught me that sometimes patience can go a long way in order to succeed in whatever I have my heart set…
