“Strength and growth only come only through continuous effort and struggle” - Napoleon Hill. As a Sophomore I took 1 challenging class, which was an honors class, because I was afraid of struggling and fear of failing. I was almost mentally accepting that I would never have the capability or succeed in Honors classes and AP classes. I began to find out the term “Honors” was just a word the education placed to intimidate individuals to not challenge themselves. To this day this has been my biggest regret; not challenging myself with tough classes. Only then I realized through constant effort and struggle will I grow intellectually. Since August I have strived to achieve As and Bs in all my classes throughout my junior year. This goal was not

Kohn’s article “The Case against Grades” (Kohn, 2011) effectively captures the anxiety that most students have about grades. “In fact, students would be a lot better off without either of these relics from a less enlightened age” (Kohn, 2011) Kohn writes. I agree with Kohn’s position in this article because there were many days in high school where I remember skipping due to the fact that I didn’t fully understand what was being taught to me. I, in turn, grew anxious about not being good enough and started failing.…

When the class becomes challenging, it allows the student to go more in depth in whatever research, reading, or critical thinking they need to do in order to get the highest grades. It is almost like a video game approach, the majority of children would not play a videogame that never progresses and always stays as easy as level one, however, once a student shows they are capable, more challenges can be given to them. In order to help keep the students in school who may not be able to handle the challenge, it is important to have “relationships with teachers and counselors who believe and support them [because it is] a determining factor in remaining in school” (60). This is also part of the “payoff” that students receive when succeeding. The students receive support by the counselors and teachers that they may not be receiving at home.…

Upon enrolling in high school I realized that I could no longer put an average effort into easy class work and be rewarded with academic satisfaction. After joining the honors course along with band and the FFA, it was revealed to me that high school was a different culture than middle school. I quickly discovered that hard work would be required to be successful in everything I will ever do. Band demanded countless hours of practice, but I ultimately gained first chair in the top band, as well as squad leader over the trumpet section. Like band, the FFA required hours of dedication, but I distinguished myself from other FFA members.…

In everyday life one is faced with challenges, for students have a constant battle because they are going through the same occurrences week after week. This year being junior year the most challenging would have to be AP language. This is the case because being in an ap class was not an aspect I was accustomed to. Over the past 4 years at John Dewey High School I have grown and learned how to pursue my dreams. At first, I believed that It was impossible for me to achieve and become what I wanted to be however, I was wrong. My teachers and counselors helped me come back on track. The lack of interest in school was making me in danger to graduate high school on time. Many people have dealt with life changing experiences throughout their lives. My life has changed in the past two years and I have been struggling with a knee problem called Osteochondritis Dissecans, or OCD for short. Osteochondritis Dissecans is a condition where the bone underneath your cartilage dies due to a lack of blood supply. This can cause the bone to crack and loosen and sometimes even completely disconnect from the joint. Not only has OCD taken me out of all my extracurricular activities such as, hockey and soccer, it has also taken a huge toll on my academics.…

Ralph Waldo Emerson's quote, "Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow", is a great and relatable quote for life. I strongly agree with this statement because I have experienced events in my life that caused me to discover myself and the world around me. Through school, athletics, and church activities, I was able to go beyond my comfort zone and participate in activities that I never thought I would do. In grade school, the work that was assigned came easily to me.…

I walked into my advanced placement United States history class believing that this class would be similar to the honors classes I took the prior year. I did not realize that the AP class I was walking into would require study habits and a work ethic that I had not quite developed at the time. I took my first quiz and received a failing grade because I was not properly prepared for it. This was the moment I understood that this was not just another class and being successful would require me to learn how to take notes, study, and work harder than I ever had in order to pass the test at the end of the year. Along the way my teacher gave us some tips and resources, but he purposely let us struggle.…

My junior year of high school, I took AP Physics 1. This was, hands down, the most challenging class I have ever taken. I have always enjoyed studying science, but physics did not mesh well with my mind. From the start, I knew this would be a difficult class, but I still promised myself I would work hard and get an A. Each class, I devoted one hundred percent of my focus and energy trying to understand my teacher’s lectures. I frantically wrote, copying down everything he said.…

Often times, the people who travel the hardest paths in life and come out stronger are the people who are recognized. Taking this into consideration, those who overcome challenges and succeed should be recognized because they inspire others to do the same. In this way, students should be encouraged in school to stay persistent even when their academic courses are very challenging, because even the smartest student will fall short of success if he or she does not stay gritty. In short, students who learn the value of hard work and persistence at a young age will be more likely to succeed in college than someone who has not because they will be more willing to put in the effort to succeed. Because of this, grittier students are more likely to…
