Sophocles 'Sacrifice In Odysseus'

Decent Essays
When Odysseus stated, “having our precious lives but not our friends,” he felt melancholy (Homer 173 l. 437). The journey itself had changed him emotionally and watching his men die had a heartbreaking effect on him. By stating this quote, Odysseus implies he regretted not dying himself. Part of him may have wanted to sacrifice to save his own men. His use of the word “precious” shows life is something that could easily be taken away.

In thinking of words that describe a hero, selfless might cross the mind, but not all heroes are selfless in fact this is a trait Odysseus and Beowulf do not share. Odysseus was far from selfless, in fact quite the opposite, he was very selfish. He believed he was more important than everyone else, so he was willing to sacrifice those under him for his own profit, or well being. This idea that the leader is more valuable than those he leads is a belief held highly in ancient Greek culture, and Odysseus reflects that. We see this in the way he treats his men during the Odyssey, they are always the first into danger, and he has no qualms leaving them behind, or letting them die if it keeps him safe.…

There are points along Odysseus journey that he found the gods would kick him back down to size and remind him he is “not that big” and to get back to reality. What seemed to be a negative trait for Odysseus was that he often blames his defeat on all of the gods and but when Odysseus was victorious he would gloat over himself. To me this seemed very haughty in nature. Regardless of all these self-centered lessons he learned along the way, when Calypso offered him eternal life and youth and that it became so strong to give in he had to plead with her to set him free, it was then he learned about how much he had a desire for Penelope and son.…

The doubled-edged sword of excessive amour-propre better known as pride, is liable to stab those who posses it when they least anticipate the injury. In Sophocles’ Oedipus the King. the wound that he was initially numb to became prevalent as the sequence of events took a turn for the worst. Due to his hubris, King Oedipus’ fall from grace was the least bit graceful. It is evident that he suffers with hubristic pride, which according to Jessica L. Tracy and Richard W. Robins can be interpreted as “having one’s passions cluster around the ego”.…

Despite going through a stairway to other world, death is feared in every living being but is not a pleasurable experience by some to be in after it occurs. In the film, the fear of death was shown on the faces of many characters in Peter’s world. For example, when Peter jumped off the plane and landed on the beach, he feared that he was in the afterlife because of the place he was in until he saw a plane that flew over him. June, in the majority of the film, feared for Peter’s life as he was undergoing brain surgery as well as the surgeons who were operating on him during surgery. When the other world was portrayed, the fear is not shown by souls as they have crossed death and can live in peace.…
