“Great words of the over-proud balanced by great falls taught us knowledge in our great age.” (Antigone 1351) This quote from the end of the Greek play Antigone shows us the value of seeing tragedy. For the modern reader, to understand tragedy he must understand that tragedy is greatness leading to a fall. Once that is comprehended he can better understand the true path of tragedy. The modern reader can learn that greatness leads to power and a desire to use it, situations force quick thinking which leads to bad decision making, and after the bad decision a fall is created which affects people around the person that falls. Through tragedy the reader can know that resisting this path can prevent their fall as well as others around them. First, this trend is shown in Antigone. The play opens with a brand new king, Creon, who became king because the two heir brothers killed each other. He decided that one was right and deserved a great funeral, but the other was evil and was to receive no burial because of this. Creon then gives a royal decree that he shall be left to the dogs and any that try to bury him including his family will be killed. The brother’s …show more content…

He then snoops around for weeks and finally comes to his own house to reclaim it from his wife’s evil sutors. He goes to the door and shoots an arrow through the most corrupt suitors neck. After that he says that none will be allowed to live even the man that has protected his son throughout the story. What can we define a decision as? A decision can be defined as a determination arrived at after consideration between a conflict that a person(s) are having (“Decision”). This means that, after you are faced with a decision, picking between at least two things or ideas, you have to decide on what you think is right, and that turns into your decision. Many people have decisions they make on a daily basis, for example, brushing their teeth, combing their hair, and eating dinner; they also could have extended, long-term decisions, like having a child or saying yes to a proposal. In Antigone, by Sophocles, we see characters faced with major moral decisions.…

Creon was a firm believer in not allowing personal feelings to get in the way of his ruling; family was no exception to him. Creon declares Polyneices doesn’t deserve a burial, since he acted a traitor to the city; thus, his body was left out in the open to rot. Creon states himself “[…] a man who rules the entire state and does not take the best advice there is […] is the very worst of men-and will always be”(Sophocles). I find irony in this statement, because in essence, the god’s rulings would be considered the highest and purest form of advice there is, and he blatantly disregards the advice of the gods to bury every citizen and proceeds to implement his own mortal decree. The chorus takes the side of Creon, and states that when a man “turns to evil, then he has no city.…

The play Antigone is intended to portray that morality is more important than the law. In order to demonstrate this, Sophocles presents a situation in which a woman is willing to go to the extremes, even facing death, in order to fight for what she believes is right. The play struggles with the idea of right versus wrong, the characters are forced to make decisions based on their conscience even if it does not coincide with the law. The purpose of laws is to set a standard of conduct for the population to follow; usually these laws are for the good of the citizens who are living in the country.…

What many readers do not understand is that, in every arrogant and harsh individual, there’s a human being that is going through his/her own judgements and make them be who they are with others. In Creon’s character, Creon pretends to be an insensible man in order to have the respect of his servants and son. What he does not realizes is that, because of his pride, he does not only loses the support of his son, but he also loses his son by feeling what it is to seeing his son in a dead body. Not only hi loses his son, he also loses his wife. This is a tremendous lesson learned to a character who at end, ends staying alone without anyone.…

He reveals his flaw as hubris and faces many challenges that make him take drastic decisions. His arrogance does not let him see that he has made mistakes and he would not assume them. He ends up losing everything that matters to him, in a devastating series of events. This makes him the perfect tragic hero in this play because he goes through excessive punishment as well as self awareness.…

What risks or sacrifices would a family member take to see another family member get proper burial? Would you risk your life to do so? A tragic hero “must experience a dramatic change in fortune (from properly to misfortune), must be morally good, have a heroic statue, true to life, and consistent in his or her actions” (Willocks). Antigone defies Creon decree despite the consequences she may face, in order to honor her deceased brother. Within the play, Antigone best fit the description for a tragic hero because she makes an error in judgment, she experiences a reversal in fortune , she shows excessive pride, she recognizes her fate because of her own actions, and she receives a fate that’s greater than deserve.…

Sophocles was an ancient greek playwright who lived during the Classical Period, and created works that still influence insights of human character today. In Oedipus Rex, turmoil erupts in Thebes when Oedipus realizes he is the murderer of his father, Laius. However, Oedipus finds that this is not his only worry; he has just recently learned that he has married his birth mother, Jocasta. While one may say that it is Oedipus’ oblivion that makes him responsible for these tragedies, it is arguable that other characters such as the shepherd and the people of Thebes may be responsible for these events. On the other hand, in Antigone, there is a large controversial affair that has just occurred in Thebes involving Antigone and her brother, Polyneicês.…
