What is a tragic hero? Many have asked this question and many have debated on which characters are tragic hero and which aren’t. A tragic hero is; “a person of noble birth with heroic or potentially heroic qualities” (CSUS 1). One of the most debated examples of tragic heroes are Antigone and Creon in Sophocles’ Antigone. Antigone is the best example of a tragic hero because she has to many a very difficult decision, many feels pity for her, and she ends up dying, but in honor. Creon show some of these trail, but not as obvious and exclusive like Antigone does. Sophocles crafted two incredible heros in Antigone: however, Antigone stood out as the epitome of what it means to be a tragic hero by making the Chorus and audience display pity towards …show more content…
Following through with this action would consequently result in her eternal rest. Before even committing the act she acknowledged that she was going to die, but she had to make that decision. “Fear not; thou livest, I died long ago Then when I gave my life to save the dead” (Sophocles 20). Antigone realizes what she has done and doesn’t regret burying her brother even though she knew that her life was at stake. This is what makes this decision 10x harder for Antigone. Creon is only bathing in his power and didn’t have to make nearly as hard of a decision that Antigone had to make. All these traits come together to show that Antigone is a better example of a tragic hero than Creon. Creon didn’t have to make any hard decisions at all. All his decision were made because he knew he had power, he didn’t think about what he was doing. Talking to the guards he ordered, “By you, as first by me; off with them, guards, And keep them close. Henceforward let them learn To live as women use, not roam at large” (Sophocles 21). Creon didn’t did think of the outcome of his actions unlike Antigone who knew that she was going to die. This is the final reason that makes Antigone the better example of a tragic

“Conductors may of course be instruments as well as victims of the divine lightning.” In Sophocles’ Antigone, the protagonist, Antigone, is both the instrument and the victim of the divine lightning. The suffering imposed upon Antigone by Creon allows her to discover the importance of democracy. She becomes both the spark that ignites the electricity of social change and the martyr who dies for the flame she kindled. Through dialogue that displays expressions of civil disobedience, idealism, and martyrhood caused by Creon’s tyranny, Antigone reveals her role as a catalyst of the tragic vision in Sophocles’ play.…

After reading the tragic story of Antigone, King Creon and Antigone had gone through many experiences that had caused them to become tragic heroes, but I believe that the greatest tragic hero of the two would be Creon. Creon is the most appropriate example of a tragic hero because he followed all of the examples of the tragic hero archetype and remained the most consistent throughout the entire story, despite what challenges he was faced with. As the saying goes, “consistency is key,” I feel as if this applies to the characteristics of a tragic hero, even if this consistency is the cause of his downfall. During the story of Antigone, immediately after Creon was given the throne, Creon displayed the trait of being very strong-minded while…

Like all tragic stories Creon ended up being the tragic hero for Antigone. And much the same as other tragic heroes Creon had noble stature, which led to tragic flaws such as pride and suburness. And that pride led to free choices such as deciding to kill his niece Antigone causing the excessive punishment of losing not only his niece but his son and wife as well. And with that punishment came an increased awareness, making Creon rethink everything he had done to cause and deserve all that pain. With noble stature Creon had many choices and laws he can make.…

Life is full of unexpected surprises and outcomes that we as humans cannot comprehend or control on many cases. Antigone is one of those great plays which portraits many life issues and situations that we see on our daily life. Although most will argue that Antigone is the true hero of the story I will be one of the few to say that Creon was the both hero and victim of this story and because of his pride, ego, and loyalty met his ultimate demise. Creon is a complex character that starts of the story as a strong ruler with harsh rules in order to put order in the city of Thebes after an invasion at the hands of Polynices.…

The play Antigone by Sophocles translated by Ian Johnston, follows the guides for a tragic hero in which the main character, the king, merges to act the role as the tragic hero. He reveals his flaw as hubris and faces many challenges that make him take drastic decisions. His arrogance does not let him see that he has made mistakes and he would not assume them. He ends up losing everything that matters to him, in a devastating series of events. This makes him the perfect tragic hero in this play because he goes through excessive punishment as well as self awareness.…

As I read the play of Antigone by Sophocles, I wondered many things, but I wondered why Antigone is the "hero" of this tragedy? What is so heroic about her act, insight and principle throughout this story? While thinking about these things of Antigone I began to wonder why Sophocles made Antigone the role of being the hero, why not someone else, such as Creon? We learn and hear of Creon throughout this story, and though the reader sees him as the opposite of Antigone, I felt that there was much more to the man and I really want to see where the conclusion takes us as we think of how both Antigone and Creon as the “hero” of this story.…

Antigone wanted to act upon one of the basic rights, the right to bury her fallen brother, but Creon would not have it. He was seduced by the power of his throne and by his ego to decline Antigone, and it ultimately led to the destruction of his personal life. Antigone should be admired for being fearless and for her will power. She stood her ground, did what she promised, and did not shy away from any repercussion or punishment by lying; she is the hero of this tragic of a story. On the other hand, Creon showed how selfish, stubborn, and unintelligent he truly is by being ignorant.…

Others may believe Antigone is a better example of a tragic hero because of her virtue and her hamartia; however, Creon portrays more Aristotelian qualities than Antigone. Creon is originally a good and admirable character, but due to his excessive pride and obsession with control, he loses his family. He comes to a realization that his decision of exiling Antigone led to his tragic fate. While Antigone is admirable and makes a fatal decision, she never has an epiphany where she realizes her own decision caused her downfall. Although Creon acted with the best intentions and tried to do the right thing, his actions resulted in horrible misery and regret for…
