Sophia's Literacy Development

Sophia’s literacy development in the area of language shows a normal sign developmentally for a 9 year old child. She is a fluent speaker of English, and she speaks Spanish as well. Sophia speaks standard English comfortably, she rarely uses slang or vernacular dialect. Sophia’s phonemic awareness becomes strong which she is able to identify and manipulate the sounds. She is no problem in constructing complex sentences at her age, she can speak long declaratives which include clauses. For example, Sophia is able to define words by relating them to others word she knows, like the word “huge”, she can define it as “ very very big, not just big, it’s opposite of tiny small.” From this ability, it shows Sophia can think about the word meaning. …show more content…
She used appropriate behavior to show her attitude to the receiver. Similarly, another sociolinguistic behavior which is Sophia uses courteous sentence like “would you mind passing the sheet to me” when the teacher hand out the paper assignment to the students. “Sociolinguistics is concerned with language in social and cultural context, especially how people with different social identities (e.g. gender, age, race, ethnicity, class) speak and how their speech changes in different situations.” It is notable that this shows how Sophia deal with her social relationship and use language in its own right. She can read in full sentences that vary in lengths and purposes, and read more difficult sentences than she typically use. When the teacher asks her to read a long paragraph in the text, she pronounces the words well and read it out fluently, there are only two or three words she does not know since it exceed her vocabulary level. If this happened, she will guess to pronounce the word based on the first few letters. And Sophia is able to read independently by using particular comprehension strategies that helpful for her. For example, when she can not figure out a word then she is able to coordinate the strategies which is based on the phonics, sight words or sentences context in order to get clues. Also, Sophia can summary what the text talk about and state the idea when she participates in a group discussion. Those of these demonstrate that Sophia is in the independent reading stage, “students are required to self-select and read materials at their own “just right” levels, navigate texts, and practice on their own what they have learned about comprehending text.” That’s match the reading level Sophia is on, she is on the level R and she is ahead. Through my observation, the reason why Sophia is doing well in reading since she is interesting in read storybook. I remembered once when the teacher asked the students get a book to read from the shelf, other students only take one, but Sophia takes several at a time. It
