Sookan has changed throughout the book, but I believe what she has the most

growth in is she has become more courageous.Sookan had it hard as a child, but

she learned how to deal with it without making a fit or tantrum. She started out in the

book not needing to be courageous, but when captain Narita

made her go to Japanese school she needed to be very courageous. The first day of

school it was hard therefore when the second day came along she did not want to go she said “I felt like announcing “I am not going to that horrible place again

this morning.” But I knew if I didn't go to school, my family would be in trouble with

Captain Narita and the police”(Choi 78) This shows that she did not want to go but she

did anyway.

Why does the federal government “lawfully choose” to encroach upon its citizens’ rights during times of war? The gripping novel, When the Emperor was Divine (2002), evinces a narrative about Japanese internment seldom told in historical accounts about World War II. Julie Otsuka recounts the story of a Japanese-American woman and her young children’s dogged journey to survive the horrid domestic policy consequences of war abroad.…

People often hate being told what to do. Whether it be a command of doing a chore, or a new law that changes a person's life. It is often even worse to be told who you are, having someone else tell a person their identity is often frustrating, and frankly is unfair. In both, "Response to Executive Order 9066," by Dwight Okita and "Mericans" by Sandra Cisneros highlight that American identity should not be judged by what people see on the exterior, it should be self defined by the individual.…

n Chapter 3: Going Native: Mommy Wants a Birkin, I feel as though Martin takes her talents of anthropology to the next level. She goes into extreme detail of her observations and her strategies in a way she has yet to do in any of the previous chapters. It amazes me that Martin can take any small action of any person and analyze it down to the very last detail. She also asks herself questions while observing in order to deepen her interpretation.…

    Childhood Vs America

As the topic of discussion, I decided to ask my grandmother about her childhood, the differences in school between Japan and America, as well as the expectations placed on women after they graduated from academics. My grandmother was born on August 23, 1941 in Tokyo, Japan. Growing up as the only daughter out of five children, she was rather a tomboy and often ran and played with the boys rather with the girls. She reminisced the times when the boys would catch bugs, play baseball, or have a shoe throwing contests, while the girls made flower wreathes with Chinese milk vetches, and during the rare times when both groups gathered together they would dissect out-of-range golf balls to pull out the rubber ropes packed into the balls. Although she lived by the Tama River all throughout her childhood, pollution and lack of water treatments lead to the waters becoming too dangerous to wade in and by the time she was in 4th grade,…
