Sookan changes in many ways throughout the book Year of Impossible Goodbyes when faced with the following situations: Sookan has a deepening hatred for the Japanese, losing the sock girls and Sookan and Inchun escaping to South Korea. My first example of change is when Sookan has a deepening hatred for the Japanese because they have sent her grand father into depression that has led to his death. Represented by this quote "grandfathers voice is weak but he whispers with determination my 'daughter did you not hear me ask my grandchildren, not you to do it this time . . . It won't hurt them'" (choi 42). The change is Sookan is starting to take responsibility by washing her grandfathers feet which is an honor and a privilege. My second example
