One way Sookan became more resilient is when Sookan's grandfather died when he lost the will to live. This took a big toll on Sookan's family, but mostly on Sookan and her mother. Another example is when Sookan was kicked out of school and her family was not given their portion of rice. Her family did not have much food and they had to conserve what little food they had. This made Sookan very hungry but she pulled through and her family finally got some rice. "The next several days were more difficult that ever. What little rice we were once able to buy was no longer available. They wouldn't sell us rice at any price."(82). This event changed her because she had to push through not being able to eat much. She learned to be crafty and resourceful to find something to eat. She became tougher because she was able to live longer times without food, which would help her when she traveled to the south. The final example to show Sookan has become more resilient is when she was escaping to South Korea with her mom and brother Inchun. They had to walk in warm clothes and she had a lot of hardships on the way. In the end, however Sookan and her brother made it to South Korea, but her mother was taken from her.
