The first event that made her brave was when she went to school. It has changed Sookan and made her brave because it makes her realize that in the time of the Japanese being in control she needs to make sure she does everything perfect and doesn't ever give in. Also she needs to listen to the teacher and power through the school days. "I did not bow as deeply as I should have. Narita Sensei whacked me on the head with her ruled" ( Choi 71).
The second event that makes her even more brave is when mother goes missing and Sookan needs to take care of inchun. She is taking on a huge responsibility of taken care of inchun and keeping him safe. She is taking over from mother and is helping inchun be strong and keep going forward. This changed Sookan and made her even more brave because it made her a very unselfish person. She if putting other people in front of her so "they" can be safe. She doesn't think of her safety, she thinks of inchun. Also she is being brave by not caring if she gets caught and doing what she has to do to survive. She is different now because she changed from a girl to a strong women in an instant. She is a better person because she took on incredible responsibilities and that made her more caring and loving. She basically "gained" her life back by leading herself and inchun into the south. It was her job to take care of him and she did it. This applies to the greater world beacuse sometimes a huge responsibility might come someone's way unexpectedly. And this book tells is saying that anyone can take on any challenge that
