An individual's environment affects choices made. Nature and Nurture are both two leading backgrounds that determine the way people may act and think. The environment around us alters the way people live their everyday life. Parental quality is very influential to one's life. While Baldwin uses a friend to portray how his character made negative choices, Mason uses family to show how his character changes, lastly O’Connor uses society to grasp how an individual can change based on his environment around him.
A lack of mental structure can cause an individual to make similar decisions as those around, which could negatively affect someone’s life. Sonny’s brother the narrator is walking out from the school he teaches at and is talking about Sonny's friend growing up; he said “He'd been Sonny's friend. He'd never been mine, having been too young for me, and, anyway, I'd never liked him.
