My parents are from a small country located at the west side of Africa called The Gambia. Being that I was born and raised in New York, I have never been to my parents homeland. Throughout my childhood, my parents taught me how to speak two different languages English and Soninke. The Soninke language is very important to not only my parents but to me also. At home it is all we speak. It is the way I interact with my parents, it gives me comfort and most definitely gives me life. However, speaking Soninke as equally as English has been a bittersweet experience for me. Although at home speaking both languages isn't much of a problem, outside home it is. This showed me how people have different views about speaking more than one language. This
