Based on the situation given, the conflict could be prevented if Sonia and Sam had decided to really talk to each other in order to solve the issue concerning the way how each one considers the best way of raising their kids.
Having said that, it is clear during the process of the situation, that neither of them were really open to genuinely listen to the other party. Having different opinions under any circumstances is considered normal, but in Sonia and Sam´s case, the situation itself was related to their kids and how differently they both think.
