From the first three lines of the song “Us and them And after all we're only ordinary men Me and you God only knows it's not what we would choose to do” the rock band suggest that the soldiers at war do not wish to partake in massacring fellow brothers and sisters however have no choice as they are fighting for their nation. The lines “ Forward he cried from the rear and the front rank died And the general sat And the lines on the map moved from side to side” serve to show just how Generals and other higher ranked officials in the military dish out orders from the leisure of their offices. Not having to worry about being bombarded with bullets and shells. “And the lines on the map moved from side to side” suggests the rearrangement of countries physical and economical appearance a typical example would be the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine with both nations seeking each others land. “Black and blue And who knows which is which and who is who” suggests it is very hard to determine who is the good and bad guy when at war as people will have biased opinions. “Blue and black” could also refer to the bruising of skin while on the battlefield.
