Song Of The Sea

Tomm Moore brings yet another beautifully depicted animation of his background story to life in his film Song of the Sea, which tells a story of Ben, a young boy, and his sister Saoirse about their adventure on the Emerald isle in Ireland. The story entrances the audience with it’s visual effects that were hand drawn, and captivating details about different types of Irish legends and creatures which make this film a very moralistic and gratifying experience. Oscar nominated, Award winning and simply jaw dropping, Song of the sea opens with a young Irish family and a child on the way. The story mostly revolves around Ben, voiced by David Rawle and Saoirse, though she does not speak much in the film, voiced by Lucy O’Connell. It holds lessons for people to apply to life and morales that people to live by. The entire movie is based on the stories that Ben’s mother had given him before she left and then continue to resonate through the film as Ben finds his path and eventually, his freedom. Ben was very distant in the beginning because he felt very alone due to his father becoming depressed over the loss of his wife, and Saoirse not being able to speak, which even if she could, Ben would not want to talk to her because he somewhat blamed her for the loss of his mom. As the story progresses, he comes to realize that she plays a much bigger part in his life and lets her become closer to him. Ben creates a bond with Saoirse that comes with maturity and understanding. He eventually becomes the big brother that his mother knew he would be. The literal scene where he starts to understand and come full circle is when he retrieves the coat for Saoirse which in turn saves her, and in a way saves Ben.
