The song I have chosen to analyze is called Where I Wanna Be, sung by an R&B artist named Donnell Jones. I decided to choose this song because of the message the artist portrays, which deals with a young man who is not ready to fully commit in a relationship between him, and his girlfriend. Thought the song he expresses his feelings in how he is not ready to fully commit. While at the same time tells her that he doesn’t want to hurt her. Although this song has no personal significance in my life, a person could understand how many individuals today could relate to this song. There are many people in relationships where one person of the relationship might not take the relationship as serious, and not express the same feelings as the other. The lyrics expressed in this song explain how the artist, and his girlfriend have been together since their teenage years. He tells his girlfriend that he just needs some time to be alone to see where he wants to be. Through the lyrics, the artist is painting a picture of a women that he has been in a long-term relationship with for some time. What does a “reputation” mean? As defined by the Cambridge dictionary, reputation is “the opinion that people in general have about someone or something or how much respect and admiration someone or something receives based on past behavior and character.” Based on this explanation, we realize that each individual is responsible for shaping his own reputation, either purposely – similar to what many politicians do – or naturally by his actions, good ones or bad ones. But an established reputation is not always uniform, meaning it opens a debate about a certain person, action or event.…

The Crow & The Butterfly A musician’s inspiration for a song can come from anywhere, even their own subconscious, and that proves true in the case of my favorite song “The Crow & The Butterfly” by Shinedown. The singer of the band and the writer of the song, Brent Smith, has said his inspiration came from a dream he had about a mother dealing with the death of a child. The song to me represents loss in any sense that is relevant to the listener. The emotion you feel while listening to the lyrics can speak to anyone in different aspects of their life.…

The lyrics joined with the alternative style of instrumentation makes for an odd combination. The message originally takes a lofty feel, suggesting that love could be a game of sorts. The artists’ incorporation of “Stand By Me” evolves the sentiment of the message. The playful tone of the song continues, but gives the message a more sarcastic impression. The facetious happiness of the message gives promise to the heartache the singer is truly feeling.…

This song talks about the speaker driving up to Oakland to see his girlfriend and can’t wait to get away from all the horrors of where he is living only to be met with new problems. This is similar to the fact that in the book Mayella is trying to get away from the horrors of kissing a black man by lying and saying that he raped her, trying to get him killed. Yet, she doesn’t know about the problems that can erupt from having an innocent man killed. The tone of both the book and the song is tense. You feel tense and a bit excited in the song when the speaker is talking about the problems he faces when he gets to his girlfriend.…

Have you ever heard a song that has impacted your life? Songs are a form of art that allows artists to express their feelings in a form of music. Songs can be interrupted in many ways; some songs have a more literal meaning, while other songs require you to interpret the lyrics to understand the deeper meaning. Artists often use figurative, metaphorical, and poetic elements in their songs to help develop the overall message. The use of figurative terms in a song leaves the interpretation of the song broad and allows the listener to have their own meaning of the song.…

Illustrating the complexities of interpersonal relationships, the XX released their self titled freshman album to critical acclaim. Among the songs on the album, “Islands” best demonstrates the complexities of interpersonal relationships owing to its lyricism, both minimalistic and introspective. Two lovers declare loyalty to each other while recognizing the sacrifices they are making; they are reluctant to let go of the freedom they cherish but feel preconditioned to be together. Much of this story lacking in the lyrics of the song but is portrayed using other means. Through the use of cinematography an element of expression is depicted that would not otherwise be possible through melodic and lyrical depiction alone.…
