February 13, 2017 WORD COUNT: 807 Tracy Chapman Fast Car Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car was a very interesting and kind of depressing song to listen to at first. The pain and sadness in her words really makes the listener feel everything that she is saying. Just by going through the lyrics, at first the song seems extremely depressing and seems as if no good will ever come for Chapman. And at first this is what I had thought, but after going through the lyrics time after time and listening to the song a handful of times I came to the conclusion that although the song may sound sad and depressing at first, I see it as inspiring.

A theme that entails that things will get better. It is easy to Chapman’s tone as hopeless, but the narrator of the song comes off as being strong willed. She makes a risky choice to get involved with a man with a car that is obviously not a particularly good person, but it is pretty clear that not only is she unhappy with the situation, but doesn't see her situation as being permanent. She knows that there is a way out and she is willing to take advantage of it in order to chase a better life. The name of the song, fast car, cars provide transportation. They provide freedom. They provide a way out. This song is about taking the opportunities that are presented to you in life. It is about not letting anybody hold you back from what you want in life and what you are trying to achieve. It's about doing the right thing, and not letting people take advantage of you. Chapman has succeeded at becoming the person she wanted to be, finds out that she doesn't need that fast car anymore. She has gotten herself to a point where she doesn’t need that man, that fast car, or anyone. She is making money and got out of the place that she dreaded and is now making a life of her own.
