In the 1960’s California was known as the surfing state. The Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, AL Jardine, Mike Love, Dennis Wilson, and Carl Wilson, wanted to go out and have fun. Surfing was starting to evolve from its Hawaiian roots during the 60’s. It was spreading from the West Coast to the East Coast in the U.S. The Beach Boys never actually surfed, but was inspired by the surfers and the great time everybody was having around them. So they wrote a song about what it’s like to cruise along the waves and relax.
“Surfin’ U.S.A.” takes the listener to another world of what California was like in the 1960’s. The song lists several places that is popular to surf in, in the U.S.A. There are different ways in comprehending the song. Figuratively in the song California and all the other places mentioned are part of the U.S.A, surfing in the song represents U.S.A’s freedom. In “Surfin’ U.S.A.” they name many different places in the U.S. that are being “surfed” at, this is saying that all these places are now free.
“Surfin’ U.S.A” is categorized a surf, Rock N’ Roll song. The instruments used are keyboard, guitar, tambourine, and drums. The rhythm has a fast a pace to go along with the lyrics. The song is about their freedom they have so the rhythm plays along as they are happy and enjoying how much freedom they have.
