Song Analysis Of Praying By Kesha

The song I chose was Praying by Kesha. The album the song is part of is called Rainbow. It was written in 2017, by the producer Ryan Lewis. The songwriters are Kesha Sebert, Ryan Lewis, Ben Abraham, and Andrew Joslyn. The genre of the song is pop. The meaning of the song is that even at the lowest times in life things get better.
The song is about someone who was in a bad relationship. “Cause you brought the flames and you put me through hell/ I had to learn how to fight for myself” (Sebert). This shows how someone put her through the worst. She had to learn how to be able to stand up and defend herself. “Cause I can make it on my own/ And I don't need you, I found a strength I've never known.” (Sebert). She has found a strength in what they have put her through to become stronger and be able to live without them.
What I think the deeper meaning of the song is that even when you are at your lowest there is always a turning point for better things to come. She is also talking about not just moving on with your past, but finding peace with yourself and the past. The line “I'm proud of who I am/

The beginning of the video is her in a casket. Then it goes to black and white, and she talks about how she doesn’t want to live anymore and why people are betraying her. The video starts off slow but it keeps coming back to the black and white part of her stranded alone in the ocean. As the video and song progresses she starts to get up from the wood she is laying on in the ocean. Then a colorful bird lands next to her while it is black and white. Then as the video is close to the end it shows her fighting/ running away from her fears. Then she starts to climb a mountain and she is in a rainbow dress walking on water. This is showing that even when things are bad and you don’t want to be here anymore that you can get past this and find peace with

The song is about a relationship in which she is trying to please her partner, to meet their expectation, but they are expecting too much from her. In the end, they ask too much - she is only human and there's only so much she can handle before she breaks. In the song, she sings, “I can bite my tongue, I can stay awake for days if that's what you want” she has to almost tiptoe around him to please him ultimately becoming someone who she is not. Throughout the song, she talks about how a woman has to impress a man to be with him, has to be perfect and meet his expectations and if she doesn't he breaks her down. She has to consciously mold herself up to something she is not, because it is what he wants.…

This song is transcendentalistic, due to the fact it blurs nature and finding one's own spirituality and true being once again. Stevie Nicks is singing about finding herself and how others can find themselves if they just look in their “reflections” in nature; the snow covered hills. Towards the end of the song, she also mentions changing her ways, eventually becoming bolder since she is getting older and learning new things about herself everyday. She finds these numerous traits among herself, bettering herself as she goes by listening to nature surrounding her and her own thoughts; which she denied earlier, scared to change and become confident in herself and independent. However, at the ending of the song, she regains herself and gives advice…
