Perfume Genius’s track “Hood” is a song of intense complexity, as well as beautiful, simple tragedy. Perfume Genius, the stage name of Mike Hadreas, is a one-man solo artist, and “Hood” is the ninth song on a twelve track album called Put Your Back N 2 It, released in 2012. Hadreas is openly gay, and sexuality plays a large part in many of his works, “Hood” being a prime example, although not the central focus of the song. With various interpretations and subjective relatability, the true meaning of “Hood” is still able to shine through, especially with Hadreas’s use of rhetorical devices and artistic decisions that enhance the audience experience.
Rhetorical devices are used throughout the song and the video in order to help Hadreas get his

“You’d never call me baby, if you knew the truth” (Hadreas 1), is true to nearly everyone. One must keep their own strangeness, flaws, and insecurities hidden in order to maintain appeal and attractiveness to their partner. When one reveals their true self and lets go of all such fears, one often finds their partner will abandon them, for that true self was not the person they fell in love with. Hadreas is shown with and his partner in the video, “gay porn star Arpad Miklos” (Dombal 1), and Miklos is doing Hadreas’ hair and makeup. This action is Hadreas hiding his true self, covering himself in makeup and a wig, and removing the clothes he was previously wearing. He goes through these changes before he finally touches and joins his partner as they pose for photographs, as if to say he must put on a mask before he can be around his partner. This fear of showing his true self is evident in the lyrics: “I am scared baby that I can’t keep it up for long” (Hadreas 1). If the facade were ever to crumble, Hadreas expresses his fear that he will lose the one he loves just for being who he truly is. The complexity of these feelings, yet the fact that nearly everyone can relate to them, is where the tragedy of the song lies. However, it does beg the question: what’s worse, losing the one you love, or hiding …show more content…
The song features themes of sexuality, secrecy, and, most importantly, love. The ballad expresses how Hadreas hides his true self for his lover, but is growing ever fearful that his illusion will crumble and his lover may leave him once finding out who he truly is. Many feel this same fear in their own lives; believing that their true self is undesirable or too strange to reveal, and it is necessary to keep that self from their lover. Often, this has a negative effect and creates tension or distance from one and one’s lover. The secret and the love become so entwined to the point where one or the other will snap. One can only hope for someone who will accept them for who they really are. But perhaps it would be easier if everyone learned to accept themselves,

The artist commences to criticize the negligence of the American system towards the common people: “Seem like half the race is either on probation, or in jail-Hey officer, man, we don’t want nobody getting killed, just open up that cell.” The use of an overstatement to describe his observations, suggest his concern for the human race amid the massed-out violence and incarceration of individuals of color (“the race”). The comparison of two differentially valued problems in our society paved way for the union of this song’s absolute message. In its entirety , “Crooked Smile”, communicates a single idea: the collateral damages of the modern world ambient. From insecurity to violence and much of the tragedies we see on the news, all originate from our prejudistic nature; the differences in color, size and race, which are responded to with hate towards one another.…

Author used words such as “on and on”(line 11) to demonstrate the deepness and the intensiveness of the young man’s desire toward the woman. An image of the young man alone in the bed, “tossed from one side to another”(line 2) showed how much he suffered from loving the woman he was unable to get. This stanza conveyed sorrows and pains the man went through when the maiden he thought of day and night rejected him, and this created in a sad tone in contrast to the happy and exciting tone before. Nonetheless, starting from the fourth stanza, the tone seemed to move back toward the happy side of the scale. In line 16, “With harps we bring her company”, the young man shortened the distance between him and the maiden through playing harps.…

“Smells Like Teen Spirit” is a song originally written and recorded by the Grunge band Nirvana in 1991 on their “Nevermind” album and is considered to be one of the most influential songs the band had written during their time. One year later, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was covered by singer-songwriter Tori Amos for her “Crucify” EP. While the cover may be extremely different from the original, there are still some elements that are similar among both versions. In contrast, both Nirvana and Amos play different styles of music which would change how the song is viewed by their respective audiences. Although the lyrics, in general, are the same, the overall meaning and mood of the song is different based which artist is playing the song.…

Throughout this journey the speaker has unsuccessfully attempted to identify what gives this other person so much power, “(i do not know what it is about you…only something in me understands)” The speaker says this in a way that leads the reader to believe he has all but given up on trying to identify what this woman possesses that allows her this power over him. Imagery is present, giving voice to his loved ones eyes and voice to the rose. Personification is used in the last line of the fifth stanza, “nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands”.…
