Zoe, this is one of my favorite songs. When Ruth told me your name I thought immediately of the song by Lenny Kravitz for his daughter Zoe. I wanted to share with you the lyrics that Lenny wrote for his Zoe. This is song is from an album called “Mama Said”. The album came out the year before I met your mom in 1992. A few years before we became roommates in college.

From that we , the listeners, should take the time to fathom the lyrical piece for it’s deeper meaning. When the track first dropped fans thought it was about Chance reminiscing about doing drugs with a friend in his pastime. From this course, the artist that influenced my music taste the most is Ruth Brown with her song, "Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean". I really like her performance in the music video for this song because she have such a unique and robust style of singing that just pull you in. She bring pop influence to an R&B song, which completely change the mood of the lyrics. Her robust vocals also introduce a sense of fun and enthusiasm to the song. She makes her songs unique by singing the lyrics at different range of vocal, which also give her songs a sense of individuality that only she can replicate.…

I have no musical back ground at all, I just learned the word timbre so I am going to approach this from a listener points of view, as in a untrained ear so to speak. I listen to both songs three times while following the lyrics, and each time I notice something slightly different. The lyrics showed the content of the song in a social sense. But the timbre showed the emotional side that the lyrics alluded to. There is a progression of emotional that leads to a climax at the end that leaves the me the listener wondering what more about the culture and the tragic daily events that I have never known.…

In the fifth line, Brooks declares that she “[wants] to go in the back yard now,” representing how she has now grown up enough and is ready to go out on her own. In the sixth line, she says that she may want to go “down the alley,” illustrating how she has become more rebellious than before and wants to experience even more than she did before. In the first stanza, Brooks only wanted to “peek at the back,” but now she wants to go in the back and go down the alley. The “alley” is used to represent the extremities Brooks will go to in order to change her life. The “alley” is so far away from what she is used to in the front yard, so she wants to go there in order to experience all that she can.…

In J.Coles “She Knows” he uses a juvenile young man to demonstrate the life of a average suburban family and the struggles they go through. By looking at the the two scenes spoken about in this essay, we can see what exactly J.Cole means in his title “She Knows”, which most viewers don’t see; this is important because J.Cole changes the meaning of “She Knows” through the entire music video. The first important scene starts with the young man being dropped off by his mother and father on his way to school. This scene is significant because previously before the young man left the house he stole money from his parents and the young mans mother gazes at him in the car as if she knew what exactly he had done. The second important scene starts with…

Many artists these days tend to sample other authors work into their songs to add a greater purpose or meaning to their music. Although this technique is not used in a lot of genres and appears mostly in hip-hop music, forms of music sampling have been around since the late 1900’s. Artists like Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar are known for sampling other artist’s music or speeches and incorporating them into their songs to enhance the message or theme that is trying to be presented. Kendrick Lamar uses a sample in his song “Alright” to help illuminate what life is like as an African American and the struggles that they face due to their skin color.…

The novel, The Last Time I Saw Mother details the journey that Caridad embarks on to uncover the past that was hidden away from her and is the central message throughout our trailer. One of our core ideas is the representation of the members of Caridad’s family and their past through the “red strings of fate”. Caridad’s story is not her own. Her story and the secrets of her past are intertwined with the other protagonists within the book. Their connection has created a motif of a red string which quite literally connects the scenes throughout of the trailer.…
