Prompt: Describe a book, movie, song, or other work of art that has been significant to you since you were young and how its meaning has changed for you as you have grown.

The one song that has continued have a significant impact on me throughout my life has been “Drift Away”, by Dobie Gray. As a child, I initially liked the song just because of how it sounded, but it soon became my favorite. At this point in my childhood, I didn't look for meaning in songs or in my surroundings because I still possessed a sense of childlike wonder. I still believed that everything was good and just, and I hadn't experienced true suffering preventing me from being able to sympathize with the raw emotion within the song. However, “Drift Away” still snuck into my heart.

The Jones Store eventually shut down and Macy’s replaced it. The only problem was, Macy’s didn't play the song over the speakers. Because of this I seen began to despise Macy’s. This may have been childish of me to do so, but I believe that this anecdote shows how significant the song became for me. Even before I sympathized with Dobie Gray, the song meant more to me than almost anything else, and I just couldn't comprehend why. I then found myself searching for “Drift Away” every time I listened to the radio, living in a state of desperation, not knowing when I would get to hear it

Für Elise by Beethoven is the song that expresses who I am. When I started playing piano, I got frustrated that most of my family had a natural talent while I didn't. My father talked to me and gave me one of the most important lessons of my life: "Practice makes perfection, if you want something, insist until you get it". After playing piano as a hobby, at age 17 I decided to take my skills to the next level by taking piano lessons at college and I challenged myself to first learn how to play Für Elise. It wasn't easy, but practice made perfection.…

I feel the song Compass by Lady Antebellum describes my character in a nutshell. It’s about following your heart not as much your head. It is about living life as it’s laid out, not how you think it’s supposed to be. I love this song because it also reminds you that someone will always be there when you need them. You may not know who they are, but I hope humanity has not yet reached the point where we leave another human being in need out on the street without offering any help.…

Music has the ability to elicit strong sensational feelings from the listener and often it comes from a unique blend of the song itself and the environment surrounding the listener. One song can leave your whole body covered in goose bumps with your hair sticking straight up; this is exactly what happened to me when I heard Renegade by Styx for the first time. Styx is an American rock band from Chicago that dominated the rock scene in the mid 1970’s and early 1980’s. Renegade was released in 1979 when Styx was comprised of five members; the song made its way to #16 on the billboard that year but it’s impact has stood the test of time and is felt just as strongly today.…

A few years ago, one of my good friends sent me some songs to listen to by a band that I had never heard of called Twenty One Pilots. Their sound was completely different from anything I had ever heard before, containing some rap, a ukulele, and a piano all in one album. No one song sounded like the other, but they all contained one common element: some type of deep message hidden in the lyrics. At first, I rejected the band, not liking the way the music sounded, but when I listened again, really paying attention to the lyrics this time, I fell in love immediately. Somehow, these short 3 minute songs by this almost totally unknown duo had utterly changed my entire perspective on life, and on the effects of music in particular.…

Every song would have a different meaning, and more attention, destruct and love in it than the last. There are certain songs that are more committed to a certain time or event that has happened. Some are due to it being the song we sang when at the time, some being the lyrics that stuck years later yet most are because of the feeling when the song is first heard. Going as far back that I can remember, most of the songs that I would hear would be on the car rides to school or camp.…
